The Broken Hockey Stick

I decided to avoid a long discussion of global warming in my book Tuning the Diamonds because I wanted to draw attention to the fact that Earth was experiencing Energy Driven Evolution, caused by the massive delivery of evolutionary energy from solar, cosmic and galactic sources. This view is shared by many scientists who cite obvious solar and cosmic influence on our climate and more recently, new research that has proven the link between Space Weather and Earth's climate. The Russian Planetophysical State of The Earth and Life report does not waste time either discusing CO2, and simply states:

"The temperature regime of any given phase of climatic reorganization is characterized by contrasts, and instabilities. The widely quoted, and believed, "Greenhouse Effect" scenario for total climatic changes is by far the weakest explanation, or link, in accounting for this reorganization."

Even after I did more research for the Joyfire Publishing webpage Solar System Transformation: It's Not just global warming on Earth, I still did not appreciate the fact that there was a deliberate manipulation of data to hoodwink people into believing that global warming is being caused by the increase in carbon dioxide [CO2] emissions and to downplay the influence of the Sun. So even though I knew that Hansen's "hockey stick" was discredited, it was not until I saw the film An Inconvenient Truth did I realise just how this climate change/temperature graph was central to the argument of CO2 causing global warming. However, intrigued by the current furore in the media and the obvious rising level of panic being expressed, I decided to do some more homework.

James Hansen was the NASA-employed scientist who started the current climate alarmism on June 23, 1988, when he appeared before a United States Congressional hearing on climate change. On that occasion, Dr Hansen used a graph to convince his listeners that warming was taking place. The so-called "hockey stick" temperature graph by climate scientist Michael Mann and his colleagues, purported to show that temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere remained relatively stable over 900 years, then spiked upward in the 20th century, presumably due to human activity. Mann's "Hockey Stick" came under severe scrutiny by many scientists and finally in 2006, the National Academy of Sciences refuted the foundation of the science behind the "hockey stick".

It's not just that Hansen's "hockey stick" is discredited, it must be pointed out that this is an excellent example of the extent that scientists will go to hide the truth and perpetuate a lie. Mann et al. created a climate model that regardless of the input data, the answer was always the same! We are actually talking fraud here! Simply, the data was "doctored" and it took about 4 years for it to be exposed. The Hockey Stick Lie hides the fact that in the last thousand years the climate has varied quite a lot and there was a need to remove certain 'Inconvenient Truths' like a Medieval Warm Period and a Mini Ice Age that occured in Europe! The facts are now available to the general public in the new book, Unstoppable Global Warming, Every 1500 Years, by S. Fred Singer & Dennis T. Avery. Anyway, since there seems to be desire to create a concensus view based on a lie, there are always some people who decide to fight back and tell the truth. After the dire predictions of economic and social effects of unchecked global warming provided by the UK HM Treasury Stern Report on the Economics of Climate Change. Christopher Monckton, was given the opportunity by the UK Daily Telegraph to provide some "balanced" reporting of the facts. He is well qualified to do this and in his professional capacity he even advised the ex-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, on scientific scams and scares.

Christopher Moncton meticulously deconstructs how the scientists generated the "Hockey Stick" and points out how the role of the Sun was underplayed. Here are some exerpts:

The UN [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)] undervalued the sun's effects on historical and contemporary climate, slashed the natural greenhouse effect, overstated the past century's temperature increase, repealed a fundamental law of physics and tripled the man-made greenhouse effect.

The UN abolished the medieval warm period (the global warming at the end of the First Millennium AD). In 1995, David Deming, a geoscientist at the University of Oklahoma, had written an article reconstructing 150 years of North American temperatures from borehole data. He later wrote: “With the publication of the article in Science, I gained significant credibility in the community of scientists working on climate change. They thought I was one of them, someone who would pervert science in the service of social and political causes. One of them let his guard down. A major person working in the area of climate change and global warming sent me an astonishing email that said: ‘We have to get rid of the Medieval Warm Period.’ … ”

Scores of scientific papers show that the medieval warm period was real, global and up to 3C warmer than now. Then, there were no glaciers in the tropical Andes: today they’re there. There were Viking farms in Greenland: now they’re under permafrost. There was little ice at the North Pole: a Chinese naval squadron sailed right round the Arctic in 1421 and found none.

In some places it was also warmer than now in the Bronze Age and in Roman times. It wasn’t CO2 that caused those warm periods. It was the sun. So the UN adjusted the maths and all but extinguished the sun’s role in today’s warming. Here's how:

• The UN dated its list of "forcings" (influences on temperature) from 1750, when the sun, and consequently air temperature, was almost as warm as now. But its start-date for the increase in world temperature was 1900, when the sun, and temperature, were much cooler.

• Every "forcing" produces "climate feedbacks" making temperature rise faster. For instance, as temperature rises in response to a forcing, the air carries more water vapour, the most important greenhouse gas; and polar ice melts, increasing heat absorption. Up goes the temperature again. The UN more than doubled the base forcings from greenhouse gases to allow for climate feedbacks. It didn't do the same for the base solar forcing.

Sami Solanki, a solar physicist, says that in the past half-century the sun has been warmer, for longer, than at any time in at least the past 11,400 years, contributing a base forcing equivalent to a quarter of the past century's warming. [Bold added for emphasis added]
