Geoengineering side effects could be potentially disastrous, research shows
Comparison of five proposed methods shows they are ineffective, alter weather systems or could not be safely stopped
Guardian News, 25th February 2014
... researchers at the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany, modelled these five potential methods and concluded that geoengineering could add chaos to complex and not fully understood weather systems. Even when applied on a massive scale, the most that could be expected, they say, is a temperature drop of about 8%.
The potential side effects would be potentially disastrous, say the scientists, writing in Nature Communications. Ocean upwelling, or the bringing up of deep cold waters, would cool surface water temperatures and reduce sea ice melting, but would unbalance the global heat budget, while adding iron filings or lime would affect the oxygen levels in the oceans. Reflecting the sun's rays into space would alter rainfall patterns and reforesting the deserts could change wind patterns and could even reduce tree growth in other regions.
Comment: The question you have to ask is: why the desperation when the Earth has been through this all before?
Terraforming Earth: Geoengineering megaplan starts now
New Scientist, 9th October 2013
THIS is how we will hold off disaster. To help us avoid dangerous climate change, we will need to create the largest industry in history: to suck greenhouse gases out of the air on a giant scale. For the first time, we can sketch out this future industry – known as geoengineering – and identify where it would operate.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change now considers geoengineering to be respectable. The reason is simple. Unless our greenhouse gas emissions start falling soon, Earth will probably warm this century by more than 2 °C, at which point things get nasty – because human society might not be able to adapt. But emissions are still rising. The upshot is we urgently need ways to suck CO2 out of the air. This was the subject of the Oxford Conference on Negative Emission Technologies, held last month in the UK.
Comment: As anyone knows, who is following the scientific 'debate' about is really happening, CO2 has little or nothing to do with global atmospheric temperatures. Based on historical facts, of long periods of low solar activity, an Ice Age is much more likely. So, what I find utterly amazing is that nobody that I have come across, has given the completely obvious reason for the desperation by world controllers to remove increasing amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere as the planet becomes more and more electrified... Well, I can tell you, at some point in the near future, there will come a critical point when the heavens are going to light up and then the citizen's of planet Earth are going to have their minds blown... We will reach what I have called the status of 'Paradise' and when that happens, folk will have no choice but to experience some serious enlightenment.
A Century of Atmospheric Geoengineering and Weather Manipulation
Earth Heal, 2nd July 2013
At an international symposium held in Ghent, Belgium May 28-30, 2010, scientists asserted that “manipulation of climate through modification of Cirrus clouds is neither a hoax nor a conspiracy theory.” It is “fully operational” with a solid sixty-year history. Though “hostile” environmental modification was banned by UN Convention in 1978, its “friendly” use today is being hailed as the new savior to climate change and to water and food shortages. The military-industrial complex stands poised to capitalize on controlling the world’s weather.
“In recent years there has been a decline in the support for weather modification research, and a tendency to move directly into operational projects.” ~World Meteorological Organization, 2007
Comment: A very useful summary.
Incredible Technology: How to Engineer the Climate
Live Science, 1st July 2013
The idea behind geoengineering is to combat man-made climate change with man-made solutions, mostly involving ways to pull carbon out of the atmosphere or to deflect the sun's rays so the carbon dioxide has less heat to trap. The ideas are largely untested and highly controversial. They also involve tackling major technological challenges, some of which may be too great to overcome.
Global Geoengineering Fueling Venus Syndrome
Geoengineering Watch, 27th February 2013
Why Are They Geoengineering If Its So Destructive?
Because they can. Because there is no one to stop them. Because, at least for the short run, geoengineering is a weapon of unimaginable power (until atmosphere implodes from these programs).
Too many people fail to consider that we are not dealing with reason or sanity in regard to those that run these weather/modification weather/warfare programs. This is the same power structure that has detonated over 1800 nuclear weapons around the globe. The same power structure that sprayed its own soldiers with agent orange in Viet Nam. The same power structure that has cavalierly used depleted uranium in ammunition in conflicts around the globe. The same power structure that has routinely done biological testing on innocent civilians again and again, there is no sanity in this equation.

Geoengineering: ‘computer-based virtual worlds’ tell us how much sunblock Earth needs
WUWT, 11th October 2012
From the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory:
Earth sunblock only needed if planet warms easily
Planet’s sensitivity to greenhouse gases will determine how much shading could be needed to slow temperature rise
RICHLAND, Wash. – An increasing number of scientists are studying ways to temporarily reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the earth to potentially stave off some of the worst effects of climate change.
Comment: I was quite impressed with the satellite image here, but I think the need for a sunblock is related to the serious impact of space weather and climate change but nothing to do with a warming globe. Please also see this weeks earlier confession concerning 'chemtrails' where it has been revealed by a Swedish politician that "According to Hagberg, the sprayings are a joint endeavor by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), as well as the Swedish government in her own country, to modify atmospheric conditions via deliberate aerosol spraying efforts." Swedish official admits toxic ‘chemtrails’ are real, not a wild conspiracy theory
The Watchers, 7th October 2012
Those long, white streams of persistent, cloudy haze commonly blasted into blue skies by unmarked airplanes are not your typical contrails, says Swedish Green Party leader Pernilla Hagberg. As reported by the Swedish paper Katrineholms Kuriren, Hagberg, the first major political leader to come forward on the issue, has openly admitted that these unusual cloud trails, which fail to dissipate like normal contrails do, are actually a toxic mix of chemicals, viruses, and metals that she has collectively referred to as “chemtrails.”
According to Hagberg, the sprayings are a joint endeavor by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), as well as the Swedish government in her own country, to modify atmospheric conditions via deliberate aerosol spraying efforts. And included in this “dangerous” mix of aerosols are various chemical components, viruses and viral fragments, and metals such as aluminum and barium, which have already been shown to be accumulating in water supplies and soils around the world.
Comment: Well, it's been obvious that chemtrails are not the same as contrails, so the point of interest is WHY? I think the heading within this article is interesting: "Spraying the skies to save the planet?" Well, as I have long suspected, we have been provided with a reasonable answer that relates to the need to fight the impact of space weather, explained here as modifying atmospheric conditions. Asteroid Dust Could Fight Climate Change on Earth
Space.com, 28th September 2012
To combat global warming, scientists in Scotland now suggest an out-of-this-world solution — a giant dust cloud in space, blasted off an asteroid, which would act like a sunshade for Earth.
Instead of altering the climate by targeting either the oceans or the atmosphere, some researchers have suggested geoengineering projects that would affect the entire planet from space. For instance, projects that reduced the amount of solar radiation Earth receives by 1.7 percent could offset the effects of a global increase in temperature of 3.6 degrees F (2 degrees C). The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has noted climate models suggest average global temperatures will likely rise by 2 to 11.5 degrees F (1.1 to 6.4 degrees C) by the end of this century.
"A 1.7 percent reduction is very small and will hardly be noticeable on Earth," said researcher Russell Bewick, a space scientist at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. "People sometimes get the idea of giant screens blocking the entire sun. This is not the case ... as [the device] is constantly between the sun and the Earth, it acts merely as a very light shade or filter.
Comment: This is another half-baked geoengineering idea.... Putting an asteroid at Lagrange point 1 [L1], the location of the ACE, SOHO and WIND satellites might not be such a good idea. (There is a problem here because astronomers and space scientists can't agree on a naming convention but L2 is also the location of other satellites, so whatever the real location turns out, L1 or L2, it would just cause a major hazard for satellites.) The ACE and SOHO satellites are old with some of the instruments permanently broken down and new replacement satellites are needed, but they currently provide essential interplanetary data to help predict oncoming space weather. We get 45 minutes warning from ACE of a CME arrival if we are lucky.... the idea of putting an asteroid there to create dust that causes the solar panels to degrade quickly cannot possibly have been thought out... More dust means more damage to solar panels and that is a major new issue caused by space weather and the influx of dust and micometeroids into our solar system. Whatever, it makes you wonder whether Earth is getting a natural sunshade with the wider appearance and coverage of noctilucent clouds that have been creeping south in recent years.

"Sunshade" to fight climate change costed at $5 bln a year
Reuters, 31st August 2012
(Reuters) - Planes or airships could carry sun-dimming materials high into the atmosphere for an affordable price tag of below $5 billion a year as a way to slow climate change, a study indicated on Friday.
Guns, rockets or a pipeline into the stratosphere would be more expensive but generally far cheaper than policies to cut world greenhouse gas emissions, estimated to cost between $200 billion and $2 trillion a year by 2030.
Comment: Since the Sun continues to 'slump' combined with outbursts that are terrifying solar and space scientists, the need to place a sunshade over this planet only makes sense if we realise that our world is facing SPACE CLIMATE CHANGE. The new transmitting properties of a highly charged space environment is now a major cause for concern.

US geoengineers to spray sun-reflecting chemicals from balloon
Experiment in New Mexico will try to establish the possibility of cooling the planet by dispersing sulphate aerosols
Guardian News, 17th July 2012
Two Harvard engineers are to spray sun-reflecting chemical particles into the atmosphere to artificially cool the planet, using a balloon flying 80,000 feet over Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
The field experiment in solar geoengineering aims to ultimately create a technology to replicate the observed effects of volcanoes that spew sulphates into the stratosphere, using sulphate aerosols to bounce sunlight back to space and decrease the temperature of the Earth
Comment: This kind of research is difficult to understand when there is already ample evidence that volcanic eruptions affect the climate quite dramatically. Therefore we must wonder whether this research has an ulterior motive. Maybe, spraying sun-reflecting chemical particles into the atmosphere can be compared to 'weather planes' that are routinely creating artificial clouds, but unfortunately, there seems to be very little 'official' acknowledgment of the aims of this weather modification. I currently favour the idea that weather modification is mostly about creating an artificial ionosphere to improve communications, whilst providing some screening for electronics and computers from cosmic rays, but I don't have a lot to go on and other researchers have much more definitive ideas about what is really going on.
GeoEngineering Could Backfire, Make Climate Change Worse
Wired News, 16th July 2012
Deploying giant space mirrors and spraying particles from stadium-sized balloons may sound like an engineer’s wild fantasy, but climate models suggest that the potential of geoengineering to offset rising atmospheric carbon dioxide may be significantly overstated.
Through a variety of computer simulations used for reporting to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the team investigated a scenario where an increase in the world’s atmospheric carbon dioxide levels was balanced by a “dimming” of the sun.
Across all four models tested, the team showed that geoengineering could lead to adverse effects on the Earth’s climate, including a reduction in global rainfall. They therefore concluded that geoengineering could not be a substitute for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Comment: I think this article just provides a status update on why some have major concerns about geoengineering.
Space mirrors will dry out US and Eurasia
New Scientist, 18th June 2012
INSTALLING huge mirrors in space would help reverse global warming, but they would come at a price: less rain for the Americas and northern Eurasia.
Previous studies have shown that geoengineering cannot restore both temperature and rain to previous levels, but they could not specify what a geoengineered climate would look like.
Hauke Schmidt of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany, and his colleagues played out the same simple scenario in four different climate models. In each one, he quadrupled carbon dioxide levels from pre-industrial levels. Then, to mimic the effect of space-borne mirrors, he reduced the amount of incoming sunlight to precisely compensate for the extra trapped heat.
Comment: This is a reminder of just how seriously some fear SPACE CLIMATE CHANGE.... There are some scientists warning that we might be on the verge of an Ice Age, but others are being paid to research the consequences of geoengineering the whole planet.... Since "global warming" is virtually non-existent, then it is obvious that something else is really worrying world controllers. The desperation to maintain the status quo is evident by the consideration of extremely dangerous options to prevent energy driven evolutionary change and the transformation of Earth to a high energy plasma environment. Since this already seems to have progressed quickly with Earth's magnetic external shielding (magnetosphere) breaking down and other major shifts that have been well underway for the last twenty years or so, it does seem that mitigation efforts are already too late...
Controversial geoengineering field test cancelled
New Scientist, 22nd May 2012
THE balloon will not go up. A controversial geoengineering field test has been cancelled after the lead scientist learned of a patent on the technology held by several of his collaborators.
The Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering (SPICE) project, run by researchers at three UK universities, is investigating cooling the planet by releasing aerosol particles into the stratosphere. The field test would have tested the feasibility of the delivery system – a hose lofted by a balloon – by pumping out water spray at an altitude of 1 kilometre.
Comment: A reminder that desperate attempts to work out how to block out the impact of cosmic energies are still on going... Oh well, our modern technological world is now at permanent risk due to our reliance on national power grids and transformers as well as lots of other more minor issues like cosmic rays corrupting electronics and computer software and hardware.... glitch, glitch, glitch.... Then of course there is the impact on humans but that is a separate issue... From my point of view, I wonder why more people are simply not interested in the risk of modern civilisation breaking down...
Bill Gates backs climate scientists lobbying for large-scale geoengineering
Other wealthy individuals have also funded a series of reports into the future use of technologies to geoengineer the climate
Guardian, 6th February 2012
A small group of leading climate scientists, financially supported by billionaires including Bill Gates, are lobbying governments and international bodies to back experiments into manipulating the climate on a global scale to avoid catastrophic climate change.
The scientists, who advocate geoengineering methods such as spraying millions of tonnes of reflective particles of sulphur dioxide 30 miles above earth, argue that a "plan B" for climate change will be needed if the UN and politicians cannot agree to making the necessary cuts in greenhouse gases, and say the US government and others should pay for a major programme of international research. [...]
Concern is now growing that the small but influential group of scientists, and their backers, may have a disproportionate effect on major decisions about geoengineering research and policy.
Comment: Oh dear, the super rich and powerful people are getting worried that there modus operandi will be soon severely affected.... Well, obviously, this has nothing to do with global warming and everything to do with space weather... Modern society would not be so modern if the national power grids collapsed due to a bad geomagnetic storm but even just normal space weather is causing severe problems... I imagine that after all the stupid attempts to
own the weather, by the U.S. Military, the atmosphere over North America is in complete tatters... Actually, I can't say if things are any better over Russia either but I have noted the total disdain of U.S. malpractice by the Queen's astronomer Lord Martin Rees and I am sure he knows a little more than most as I have mentioned before.. So, at this moment, the only facts I have is the Russian Planetophysical report (1997) that mentioned a collapse of the ionosphere over North America before the solar minimum collapse of solar cycle 24. I imagine this was caused by experimentation like blowing some big holes in the radiation belts which caused the formation of temporary radiation belts (by the way there is a new project to go looking for what's happening there in 2012) and lots of little ionospheric holes and then all the damage caused by extensive communication antennae, radar etc. It would be interesting to find out just how far the standards for technological levels of communication have already deteriorated. We already know that the U.S. & U.K. military have decided that GPS is quite unreliable due to too much turbulence in the ionosphere...

Giant pipe and balloon to pump water into the sky in climate experiment
Field test by British academics marks first step towards recreating an artificial volcano that would inject particles into the stratosphere and cool the planet
The Guardian, 31st August 2011
It sounds barmy, audacious or sci-fi: a tethered balloon the size of Wembley stadium suspended 20km above Earth, linked to the ground by a giant garden hose pumping hundreds of tonnes of minute chemical particles a day into the thin stratospheric air to reflect sunlight and cool the planet.
But a team of British academics will next month formally announce the first step towards creating an artificial volcano by going ahead with the world's first major "geo-engineering" field-test in the next few months. The ultimate aim is to mimic the cooling effect that volcanoes have when they inject particles into the stratosphere that bounce some of the Sun's energy back into space, so preventing it from warming the Earth and mitigating the effects of man-made climate change.
Comment: There is plenty of evidence in the public domain that reducing world temperatures is not the main aim of all these geoengineering ideas, because the planet is not warming to any considerable degree. There are lots of volcanoes going off that are known to cool the planet and sometimes cause drastic cooling that induces an ice age, so it seems that world controllers have other major concerns. Since our planet is getting blasted by severe amounts of energy being delivered by space weather, it seems more reasonable that the main issue is the protection of the world's technological infrastructure, especially communications. Since the rich want the poor to pay for everything, the ridiculous ideas of removing CO
2 have been shot down by many scientists, incredulous at the pathetic 'science' and outright fraud being used to convince the public to care about what is happening to our world. There is really no need to go over the arguments because they have been extensively discussed all over the internet. Here we have another ridiculous waste of money scheme that will no doubt have unintended consequences like previous attempts at dabbling with Earth's delicate biosystem, that has managed over billions of years to self-regulate itself without the help of humans.
IPCC 'considering sending mirrors to space to tackle climate change'
The Telegraph, 16th June 2011
Reflective aerosols would be sent into space under a series of radical “geo-engineering” measures being considered by the UN climate science body to tackle climate change, leaked documents disclose.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) papers, leaked ahead of a key meeting in Peru next week, outline the series of techniques in which scientists hope will manipulate the world’s climate to reduce carbon emissions.
Among the ideas proposed by a group of 60 leading scientists from around the world, including Britain, include producing “lighter coloured” crops to reflect sunlight, blasting aerosol “mirrors” into the stratosphere and suppressing cirus clouds.
Other suggestions include spraying sea water into clouds as another reflection mechanism, depositing massive quantities of iron filings into the oceans, painting streets and roofs white and adding lime to oceans.
Comment: Many years ago, when I first saw an article about using mirrors to try and control the Earth's climate I thought it was a joke. Now, the situation with the erratic, aberrant sun that is lacking sunspots but can fire absolutely massive bullets at Earth is way beyond strange and the scientific community are completely out of their depth. This has now reached a point where scientists cannot predict or prevent damage, so world authorities are just hoping they will have enough time to shut down planet Earth first (satellite communications, national power grids etc) to stop a massive CME blast blowing us back to the time before the Industrial Revolution. Yet, we have scientists warning of an imminent mini-Ice Age and significant climate change that will
cool the Earth, but geo-engineering ideas are still being promoted to
prevent climate change. So, we have to conclude that the very real fear is about the quality of the energy that is hitting the Earth, generally referred to as Space Weather. This is the real cause of dramatic climate and evolutionary change and the source of the real problem perceived by world controllers. Fundamentally, our world is now at the mercy of Universal forces. We cannot control celestial forces or what they will do (Epigenetics) and our modern technological world is at risk. Do you get that? Our whole modern world is at risk... We have scientists like Henrik Svensmark et al. who have already proven that climate change is driven by the stars, but if you do the research you will clearly see that massive evolutionary change is also driven by celestial influences, hence the many ancient warnings provided by our ancestors who lived in societies that in some instances, were more advanced than our modern world, (despite the continuous effort by archaeologists today to hide the truth). Space Weather is the warning provided by our ancestors who created the constellations and called one of them Aquarius and left a picture of man pouring water out of an urn. I will not even bother with the technicalities here, but I will state that the imagery was about explaining that at certain times in the precessional cycle, we can expect a celestial downpour of epic proportions. Guess What? Space Weather is about transformation and it is clearly obvious that we will have to do things differently on this planet to survive. Who can argue with that? We now seeing epic manmade disasters (Fukushima) and I expect more to come because we have failed as a collective to heed the ancient warnings.
Geoengineering Moratorium at UN Ministerial in Japan

Geoengineering Moratorium at UN Ministerial in Japan Risky Climate Techno-fixes Blocked
NAGOYA, Japan – In a landmark consensus decision, the 193-member UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will close its tenth biennial meeting with a de facto moratorium on geoengineering projects and experiments. “Any private or public experimentation or adventurism intended to manipulate the planetary thermostat will be in violation of this carefully crafted UN consensus,” stated Silvia Ribeiro, Latin American Director of ETC Group. [...]
The unusually strong consensus decision builds on the
2008 moratorium on ocean fertilization. That agreement, negotiated at COP 9 in Bonn, put the brakes on a litany of failed “experiments” – both public and private – to sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide in the oceans’ depths by spreading nutrients on the sea surface. Since then, attention has turned to a range of futuristic proposals to block a percentage of solar radiation via large-scale interventions in the atmosphere, stratosphere and outer space that would alter global temperatures and precipitation patterns.
“This decision clearly places the governance of geoengineering in the United Nations where it belongs,” said ETC Group Executive Director Pat Mooney. “This decision is a victory for common sense, and for precaution. It will not inhibit legitimate scientific research. Decisions on geoengineering cannot be made by small groups of scientists from a small group of countries that establish self-serving ‘voluntary guidelines’ on climate hacking. What little credibility such efforts may have had in some policy circles in the global North has been shattered by this decision. The UK Royal Society and its partners should cancel their
Solar Radiation Management Governance Initiative and respect that the world’s governments have collectively decided that future deliberations on geoengineering should take place in the UN, where all countries have a seat at the table and where civil society can watch and influence what they are doing.”
Comment: The article is quite informative. Personally, I want to know when TPTB tell the truth about what is really happening, as it is becoming obvious that humans have no ability to fight the universal energies that are bombarding this planet. Maybe, common sense will prevail and world controllers will decide to adapt to massive evolutionary change, I can't see they have much choice. More:

Blotting Out Sun May Soon Be Banned
Discovery News, 16th October 2010
Blotting out the sun has been the dream of many arch-villains, including The Simpson's Mr. Burns. Their schemes may soon be foiled by the United Nations' Convention on Biological Diversity.
Super villains aren't the only ones who want to shade the Earth from the sun. Blocking some of the sun's rays could slow climate change by reducing the amount of sunlight warming the Earth, say some researchers, such as Roger Angel of the University of Arizona.
The Convention may consider banning or limiting research into space sunshades. Some question their wisdom. A space sunshade would have a rapid effect on global warming and provide time to develop more permanent measures, they say. The technique has already received serious attention from NASA and other organizations.
Comment: This article does not state very much, but for those new to the concept of geoengineering, it is necessary to explain there is real desperation by some to block out the Sun. Now, when you consider the heavy investment in satellite communications and their applications in our very modern technological world, Space Weather caused by the Sun is much more likely to be the real reason for these absurd and dangerous ideas. As some would say, who benefits? This is even more poignant as it is now becoming common knowledge that there is no clear evidence of global warming, but strong evidence that there has been a systematic tampering of global temperature datasets and great efforts to mislead the general public.
An evil atmosphere is forming around geoengineering
New Scientist, 21st July 2010
IN 1892 Edvard Munch witnessed a blood-red sunset over Oslo, Norway. Shaken by it, he wrote in his diary that he felt "a great, unending scream piercing through nature". The incident inspired him to create his most famous painting, The Scream.
The striking sunset was probably caused by the eruption of Krakatoa, which sent a massive plume of ash and gas into the upper atmosphere, turning sunsets red around the globe and cooling the Earth by more than a degree.
Now a powerful group of scientists, venture capitalists and conservative think tanks is coalescing around the idea of reproducing this cooling effect by injecting sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere to counter climate change. Despite the enormity of what is being proposed - nothing less than seizing control of the climate - the public has been almost entirely excluded from the planning
Comment: Geoengineering the planet only makes sense when we realise that scientists are trying to mitigate the impact of Space Weather, but justifying their position and the need for taxes by giving the reason as carbon emissions causing global warming or climate change. The article is quite fair and balanced and seems a departure from the usual climate scaremongering at New Scientist.
Climate Hackers Want to Write Their Own Rules
Wired Science, 23rd March 2010
This week, 200 scientists will gather in an attempt to determine how research into the possibilities of geoengineering the planet to combat climate change should proceed.
They say it’s necessary because of the riskiness and scale of the experiments that could be undertaken — and the moral implications of their work to intentionally alter the Earth’s climate.
The group is meeting at the Asilomar resort in California, a dreamy enclave a few hours south of San Francisco. The gathering intentionally harkens back to the February 1975 meeting there of molecular biologists hashing out rules to govern what was then the hot-button scientific issue of the day: recombinant DNA and the possibility of biohazards. [...] Organized by the Climate Response Fund, a new group created to support geoengineering, this week’s conference is self-consciously recalling its famous Asilomar predecessor: All the participants in the new conference were sent Rogers’ article.
A conference brochure summed up the popular attitude toward its predecessor, praising it “as a landmark effort in self-regulation by the scientific community” and attributing the lack of “dangerous releases of organisms modified with recombinant DNA” to the “effectiveness of the ultimate guidelines and procedures.” It includes a black-and-white photograph of 1975 scientists meeting in the resort’s hoary chapel (above).
Comment: So despite Climategate and the uncertainty of whether mankind has any real influence on climate change, some scientists with commercial interests want to geoengineer the planet anyway.
Earth needs sunblock and fast, scientist says
Shooting sulphur into atmosphere could slow climate change, he says
The Star, 28th January 2010
As greenhouse gases accumulate, the Earth could soon need a planetary sunblock to keep from frying.
But just what that block will consist of and who will slather it on are questions that need to be urgently answered, a Canadian researcher argued Wednesday in the world's premier science journal.
"Solar-radiation management may be the only human response that can fend off rapid and high-consequence climate change impacts," University of Calgary physicist David Keith writes in Nature.
"But because there's particularly been a taboo about talking about this, there's been very little serious work done," Keith said in an interview with the Star.

sunshield + geoengineering
Well, if you are a regular to this blog and have checked out the stories and the links it is absolutely obvious that the sun is not directly causing us much grief at the moment. However, the lack of solar activity is allowing in more cosmic and galactic energies and Earth's magnetopshere is taking a real beating. (I even saw one image where it looked like a chunk of our magnetic shielding had just been ripped away, by a galactic blast...) All of a sudden, extremely old prophecies of three days of darkness caused by a cosmic cloud no longer seem so unrealistic. Hopefully, not long now...
The Geoengineering Gambit
Technology Review, 22nd December 2009
For years, radical thinkers have proposed risky technologies that they say could rapidly cool the earth and offset global warming. Now a growing number of mainstream climate scientists say we may have to consider extreme action despite the dangers. [...]
It's not just a fringe idea anymore. The United Kingdom's Royal Society issued a report on geoengineering in September that outlined the research and policy challenges ahead. The National Academies in the United States are working on a similar study. And John Holdren, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, broached the idea soon after he was appointed.
"
Climate change is happening faster than anyone previously
predicted," he said during one talk. "If we get sufficiently desperate, we may try to engage in geoengineering to try to create cooling effects." To prepare ourselves, he said, we need to understand the possibilities and the possible side effects. Even the U.S. Congress has now taken an interest, holding its first hearings on geoengineering in November.
Geoengineering might be "a terrible idea," but it might be better than doing nothing, says Schrag. Unlike many past advocates, he doesn't think it's an alternative to reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. "It's not a techno-fix. It's not a Band-Aid. It's a tourniquet," he says.
"There are potential side effects, yes. But it may be better than the alternative, which is bleeding to death."
Comment: This is a long article. I wonder what he means by bleeding to death, are we losing our atmosphere??? As I have stated over hundreds and hundreds of postings on this News of the Imbalance blog, you can only explain the desperation for geoengineering the climate when you realise that there are some who are fully aware that we risk losing the shielding around our planet and solar system. Otherwise, it's difficult to understand the ideas of placing a shield of mirrors in space. What's more we now have proof that there has been an acceleration in blasts from the most extreme star-like objects in the Universe
Magnetars that is changing the fabric of spacetime and possibly they are the cause of the
holes in the magnetosphere. Even the well known astronomy skeptic Phil Plait wrote this year, "maybe we should be a *little* bit afraid". So, now we have terrified astronomers and members of the Space community (see previous), but the ignoranti or innocenti (depends on your perspective) are totally unaware. We can be grateful to Japanese scientists for making magnetosphere geomagnetic data easily available online so that people can make decent YouTube videos to keep us informed, this is the latest synopsis [9:18], see
YouTube - Earth Changes Explained (1 of 3). The analysis in the 1st and 2nd video is interesting, but the third in the series is just plain stupid. It is obvious that this person does not know about the recent history of dramatic blasts from magnetars, but the author gets a lot of credit for his analysis that Earth changes are being driven by cosmic factors.
Playing With Weather Stirs Debate In China
AP, 11th November 2009
"There is a remarkable news article claim on November 11 2009 with respect to weather modification. It is titled “Playing with weather stirs debate in China“.
The article includes the text
“Chinese scientists artificially induced the second major snowstorm to wreak havoc in Beijing this season, state media said, reigniting debate over the practice of tinkering with Mother Nature.
After the earliest snow to hit the capital in 22 years fell on November 1, the capital was again shrouded in white Tuesday with more snow expected in the coming three days, the National Meteorological Centre said.
The China Daily, citing an unnamed official, said the Beijing Weather Modification Office had artificially induced both storms by seeding clouds with chemicals, a practice that can increase precipitation by up to 20 percent.
The office refused to comment on the report when contacted by AFP. On Tuesday, an official had said the storm was “natural”.

Snow is only a problem in countries where they are not adequately prepared, so making the assumption that seeding clouds will induce rain is quite naive and like other attempts at weather engineering, can have unintended consequences, as I am sure the US Military have found out. For some great pictures of the early November snowfall see,

Heavy snow storms in northern China kill 40
Yahoo News, 13th November 2009
BEIJING – Unusually early snow storms in north-central China have claimed 40 lives, caused thousands of buildings to collapse and destroyed almost 500,000 acres (200,000 hectares) of winter crops, the Civil Affairs Ministry said Friday.
Nineteen of the deaths resulted from traffic accidents related to the storms that began Nov. 9, the ministry said in a statement on its Web site.
The snowfall is the heaviest in the northern and central provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Shandong and Henan since record keeping began after the establishment of the Communist state in 1949, the ministry said without giving detailed figures. It estimated economic losses from the storm at 4.5 billion yuan (US$659 million).
Chinese state media say some of the snow was induced through cloud seeding, although the precise amount of snowfall in all areas was not reported and it wasn't clear what the previous records were.
Comment: One source is stating that 7,000 buildings have collapsed, yet scientists want to geo-engineer the planet's climate..... incredible!
Can cloud ships and space sun shades fix the planet?
CNN News, 8th November 2009
"In order to stop dangerous climate change we may be forced to construct giant solar shades and cover great swathes of land with artificial trees that suck up carbon dioxide.
These are the conclusions of a year-long scientific survey of "geo-engineering" technologies by the UK's Royal Academy published earlier this year. From fake trees to cloud making ships, the ideas are designed to provide planet-scale alterations to our climate if efforts to cut emissions fail." [...]
Russian roulette with the future of the planet
But in sharp contrast to this enthusiasm many environmental groups are strongly opposed to geo-engineering,. They argue that it is a dangerous distraction from what they see as the key issue: reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"Geo-engineering is not a plan B for the climate," Greenpeace UK's chief scientist, Dr Doug Parr, said in a press statement.
Geo-engineering is not a plan B for the climate
--Doug Parr, Greenpeace
"It should be used only in desperation, [could have] widespread undesirable impacts, and raises major ethical and political issues of its own. It may be very expensive, and it may well never work.
"Many of these proposals still have risks - there is no simple global thermostat that can be turned up and down and proposals that reflect sunlight can still... have impacts on weather and precipitation leading to exactly the sorts of problems we are trying to avoid by averting climate change.
"
Geo-engineering is now being investigated because we have collectively, as a society, failed to take on the fossil fuel interests."
Comment: Well, articles on geo-engineering are now constantly in the media and I can now tell you categorically that they have nothing to do with CO2, but everything to do with the fact that there is tremendous fear that we will hit a cloudlet that will vapourise the heliosphere that acts as our solar system galactic cosmic shield. The research papers state this very clearly and NASA scientists have expressed their concern in the mainstream media. According to metaphysical sources, the heliosphere will disappear and then there will be some severe consequences, the phrase "day of illumination" has been used by Vedic seers. Your personal energy field generated by your level of spiritual evolution will be your best defence against the tsunami of cosmic radiation.
'Cloud ship' scheme to deflect the sun's rays is favourite to cut global warming
Ships with giant funnels which travel the world's seas creating more clouds to deflect the sun's rays could help cut global warming, say scientists.
The Telegraph, 7th August 2009
"The "cloud ships" are favoured among a series of schemes aimed at altering the climate which have been weighed up by a leading think-tank. The project, which is being worked on by rival US and UK scientists, would see 1,900 wind-powered ships ply the oceans sucking up seawater and spraying minuscule droplets of it out through tall funnels to create large white clouds. These clouds, it is predicted, would reflect around one or two per cent of the sunlight that would otherwise warm the ocean, thereby cancelling out the greenhouse effect caused by Carbon Dioxide emissions. [...]
According to The Times, The Royal Society is expected to announce that the decade-old cloud ship plan is one of the most promising. The Copenhagen Consensus Centre, which advises governments on how to spend aid money, examined the various plans and found the cloud ships to be the most cost-effective. They would cost $9 billion (£5.3 billion) to test and launch within 25 years, compared to the $250 billion that the world’s leading nations are considering spending each year to cut CO2 emissions, and the $395 trillion it would cost to launch mirrors into space."
Comment: The Daily Mail also released the same story on the same date, see
The cloud ships that could cancel out effects of global warming this century for £5.3bn, but I wonder how many people see the link with Space Weather, a collapsing solar system shield, an unstable magnetosphere, cosmic rays at an all time high and an uptick in DNA mutations and GPS breaking down.
Changing the planet might help preserve it
FT.com, 8th May 2009
"A giant mirror drifts slowly through space between the Earth’s surface and the sun, intercepting the rays of sunlight before they reach the Earth, and deflecting them safely away. Eco engineeringThe mirror, made up of millions of silicon chips, is situated at a point in space where the sun’s gravity and the Earth’s cancel each other. This vast structure, assembled painstakingly for years by spacecraft, drifts naturally away from its starting point over time, but complex on-board systems nudge it gradually back to resume its vital role in keeping us safe. This space mirror is – so far – science fiction. Such a structure would cost hundreds of billions of dollars, even if it were technically feasible. But soon many scientists say we may need to start building space mirrors, creating artificial clouds or altering the chemistry of the sea to prevent the worst effects of global warming. [...]
Tim Lenton, professor of Earth system science at the University of East Anglia, who conducted a review of geo-engineering methods, said scientists must beware of “tinkering with a system you do not fully understand”. For instance, he said, studies showed that putting sulphate aerosols into the atmosphere caused drying in vulnerable regions such as the Sahel and India."
Comment: Well, I have not seen an article on geo-engineering for a few weeks but the Financial Times have obliged here. Please note they have dropped the price tag to 'billions' as opposed to the 'trillions' that we have seen in previous articles, which is obviously due to the world's financial crisis. Many have already realised that world temperatures are not increasing and some climate scientists are starting to worry about a new period of cooling. Therefore, it cannot be that difficult to imagine that something else is causing world controllers some severe anxiety. It MUST be obvious to the more astute that the new phenomenon of Space Weather is the real reason for the perceived need for a space shield as the Earth's natural shields are rapidly declining and our planet is now under siege from cosmic, galactic and intergalactic energies. Thus, the desperation grows. Meanwhile, the last publicised attempt at geo-engineering was a farce and any attempts at placing a barrier in space are doomed to fail, especially as we can't even maintain a space telescope without concerns about shuttle flights being hit with space junk or tiny space rocks at high speeds during orbit. See

Obama looks at climate engineering
Breitbart News, 8th April 2009
"The president's new science adviser said Wednesday that global warming is so dire, the Obama administration is discussing radical technologies to cool Earth's air. John Holdren told The Associated Press in his first interview since being confirmed last month that the idea of geoengineering the climate is being discussed. One such extreme option includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun's rays. Holdren said such an experimental measure would only be used as a last resort."
Comment: Well, when the trend for global temperatures is DOWN but the desperation to fight something that appears non-existent is UP then the more rational must suspect that something else is causing some real anxiety. Since, NASA have informed the world that we are losing the shielding around our solar system and around our planet, I would have thought this would be a good enough reason for panic by those who don't understand that we are facing evolutionary change. What's more, there are more than a few that have noted the existence of 'weather planes' that create "chem trails". Personally, with the massive build up of evolutionary energies from galactic sources, authorities are just wasting their efforts. We are facing universal forces and the biblical "judgement".
Climate scientists admit defeat in ocean experiment -
Terra Daily, 24th March 2009
"Indian and German scientists have said that a controversial experiment has "dampened hopes" that dumping hundreds of tonnes of dissolved iron in the Southern Ocean can lessen global warming.
The experiment involved "fertilising" a 300-square-kilometre (115-sqare-mile) area of ocean inside the core of an eddy -- an immense rotating column of water -- with six tonnes of dissolved iron.
As expected, this stimulated growth of tiny planktonic algae or phytoplankton, which it was hoped would take out of the atmosphere carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas blamed for climate change, and absorb it.
However, the scientists from India's National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) did not count on these phytoplankton being eaten by tiny crustacean zooplankton."
Comment: Hilarious!!!! A very good example of scientists trying to meddle with a biosystem and the basic 'rules' being overlooked. See
Ocean iron fertilization CO2 sequestration experiment a blooming failure for more background information and some good images.
Astronomer devises giant sun shield to reverse global warming
An astronomer has proposed to reverse global warming by creating a giant sunshield to protect the planet.
The Telegraph, 20th February 2009
"Professor Roger Angel thinks he can diffract the power of the sun by placing trillions of lenses in space and creating a 100,000-square-mile sunshade. Each lens will have a diffraction pattern etched onto it which will cause the sun's rays to change direction. He intends to use electromagnetic propulsion to get the lenses into space. If work was started immediately Prof Angel thinks the sunshield could be operation by 2040.
Comment: It seems incredible to think that giant mirrors or metal plates in space, are being proposed by those who think humanity can geo-engineer itself out the way of our collective cosmic destiny. We don't fully understand sunlight, light, electricty and magnetism to name a few major facets of our reality! Note the article this week about the massive gamma ray burst that would have most certainly ionised the atmosphere thus generating a host of known and unknown effects. Like the Earth's magnetic field, massive change is underway that humans cannot forsee or control, yet some still want to try and outwit or gamble against the might of the Universe.
Climate scientists: it's time for 'Plan B'
The Independent, 4th January 2009
"Poll of international experts by The Independent reveals consensus that CO2 cuts have failed – and their growing support for technological intervention
An emergency "Plan B" using the latest technology is needed to save the world from dangerous climate change, according to a poll of leading scientists carried out by The Independent. The collective international failure to curb the growing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has meant that an alternative to merely curbing emissions may become necessary. The plan would involve highly controversial proposals to lower global temperatures artificially through daringly ambitious schemes that either reduce sunlight levels by man-made means or take CO2 out of the air.
This "geoengineering" approach – including schemes such as fertilising the oceans with iron to stimulate algal blooms – would have been dismissed as a distraction a few years ago but is now being seen by the majority of scientists we surveyed as a viable emergency backup plan that could save the planet from the worst effects of climate change, at least until deep cuts are made in CO2 emissions."
Comment: See also
What can we do to save our planet? . Well, despite the lack of increasing global temperatures, according to NASA, the Earth is losing it's shielding to Space Weather and galactic cosmic radiation is flooding the planet. Therefore, I suspect that certain quarters are now desperate to prevent the inevitable evolutionary change and the massive repercussions that will dissolve much of the existing paradigm.
How Geoengineering Works: 5 Big Plans to Stop Global Warming
Popular Mechanics, 3rd November 2008
"At first blush, geoengineering sounds like outrageous junk science. Surely there's an easier solution to the problem of global warming than technologically altering Earth's atmosphere, its cloud formations and even outer space."
Comment: Option 2 "Shoot Mirrors Into Space" seems like a different version of the crackpot geo-engineering idea listed last week. Again, constant geo-engineering articles in the media, highlights the increasingly high levels of desperation to prevent evolutionary change. Global temperatures are going down but Space Weather is up! The ozone holes are as big as ever, galactic cosmic rays are flooding the planet and the sun has just started to kick off, predicted by NASA to blast the planet with solar radiation at historic levels.... Removing CO2 will not prevent DNA mutations and evolutionary change, but nobody's talking about that....
Will smoke and mirrors shield us from the global warming threat?
Business Report, 30th October 2008
"Backers of extreme technologies to curb global warming advocate dumping iron dust into the seas or placing smoke and mirrors in the sky to dim the sun.
But even though they are seen by some as cheap fixes for climate change when many nations are worried about economic recession, such "geo-engineering" proposals have to overcome wide criticism that they are fanciful and can have unforeseen side effects."
"Climos is seeking to raise money to test adding iron dust to the Southern Ocean to spur growth of algae that grow by absorbing heat-trapping carbon dioxide from the air. When algae die, they fall to the seabed and remove carbon. Other short-cut ideas include spraying a smoke of tiny particles of pollutants into the sky to dim sunlight, or deploying a vast thin metallic barrier in space, with 100 space shuttle flights, to deflect the rays of the sun."
"Other proposals reviewed by the UN panel include installing a metallic screen covering a 106kmē patch of space 1.5 million kilometres away from Earth in the direction of the sun. The 3 000-ton structure could be put in place over 100 years by 100 space shuttle flights. "The cost has yet to be determined," said the panel."
Comment: When I first came across ideas to curb global warming, I thought some of the ideas bordered on the crackpot but as time progressed, the case for global warming has waned, but the ideas for geo-engineering have persisted. Moreover, NASA have informed the world that we are now more exposed to galactic cosmic rays and the phenomena of Space Weather, which some scientists have dared to claim actually effects weather on Earth. It seems obvious to me, that this is the real reason for the panic. OK, it is possible to surmise that we have entrepeneurs desperate to find an idea that will sell and they may or may not get these extreme ideas funded. Yet, there must be considerably disquiet amongst the more astute academics, who know that the paleoclimatic evidence clearly demonstrates that climatic changes are also accompanied by extinction events and evolutionary change.
Cloud
-seeding ships could combat climate change
Watts Up With That, 7th September 2008
"This project would require the deployment of a worldwide fleet of 1,500 free
drifting ships. According to the article, these ships 'would be powered by the
wind, but would not use conventional sails. Instead they would be fitted with
a number of 20 meter high, 2.5 meter diameter cylinders known as Flettner
rotors. The researchers estimate that such ships would cost between £1m and
£2m each. This translates to a US dollars cost of $2.65 to 5.3 billion for the
ships only.'"
Comment: It's really easy to dismiss these geoengineering ideas as global
warming hysteria and attempts at fleecing money from the public purse. However,
if you have read my book, you will know that our planet has moved into a
region of space where there is a highspeed delivery system for energies from
the galactic centre. The planet is being hammered and the result is
evolutionary change. The 'weather planes' are just not achieving very much and
I suspect HAARP has been a failure, no proof there just pure speculation, but
before you dismiss this idea, take a damn good look at the patent
formation...... It should be fairly obvious that this CHANGE is not welcome hence the panic, but metaphysical sources tell us that the WHOLE PLANET is being transformed. Hence we have many interested onlookers parked up in the aethers watching this most amazing galactic spectacle. Meanwhile, the vast majority of humans are totally unaware of what is taking place on this planet and have no clue that ONE EVENTUAL OUTCOME will be A NEW TYPE OF HUMAN.
Extreme and risky action the only way to tackle global warming, say scientists
· Geo-engineering 'better than doing nothing'
· Fake clouds among ideas in Royal Society papers
The Guardian, 1st September 2008
"Political inaction on global warming has become so dire that nations must now consider extreme technical solutions - such as blocking out the sun - to address catastrophic temperature rises, scientists from around the world warn today."
Comment: Well, we already have illegitimate activity with 'weather planes' griding up the skies, but obviously that is not working, so now more drastic measures are being mooted. If you have read my book or waded through my websites, it becomes obvious that the world is facing energy driven evolution and 'the controllers' fear the consequences. I mean, the sensational news that cats in China are morphing and growing wings in 1 month should make some people think, at least.....
Geoengineering Madness
Canada Free Press, 22nd August 2008
"Irony heaps on irony in the climate debate as we are led down the path of certainty about the problem and the cause. We now have people who blame humans for causing global warming and climate change taking deliberate action to cause cooling and counteract climate change. So, the solution to human interference is more human interference. Sadly, this assumes that you know what you’re doing that the problem is correctly identified and you’re prepared to accept the responsibility and deal with the outcome of your actions."
Comment: Well, the scientific evidence is telling us that the climate is cooling, but maybe we can understand some of the "geoengineering madness" as wild attempts to disrupt the influx of solar, cosmic and galactic energies, driving evolutionary change.
Glass Particles in the Sky Studied As 'Global Warming' Fix
CNS News, 10th April 2008
"Government scientists are studying the feasibility of sending nearly microscopic particles of specially made glass into the Earth's upper atmosphere to try to dampen the effects of "global warming." The idea, while "interesting," said one leading global warming skeptic, is "not practical" and, if done on a large scale, could depress the ozone layer and cause other problems."
Comment: The ideas of geo-engineering our way out of climate change, remind me of the story of King Canute...
Experts Discuss Engineering Feats, Like Space Mirrors, to Slow Climate Change
New York Times, 10th November 2007
"Dr. Keith, an organizer of the conference, said that at one time he thought scientists should not talk in public about "geoengineering" remedies for global warming — like injecting chemicals into the upper atmosphere to cool the poles, or blocking sunlight by making clouds more reflective or stationing mirrors in space."
Comment:
Who do these people think they are?
It's almost like they think they are the only b*******s on the planet and have the "divine right" to tinker with it at their discretion and risk the consequences. It totally amazes me that there is report after report mentioning "space mirrors" reflecting energy back into space. It's obvious to me that some scientists already KNOW that evolutionary change on Earth is being driven by energy from the cosmos, otherwise why the interest in space mirrors?
Mirror mirror in the sky, save us from asteroids flashing by
News.Scotsman.com, 4th October 2007
"A NETWORK of mirrors harnessing the destructive power of the sun might save the world from disaster, space experts believe....The orbiting mirrors would be used to focus sunlight on an area of the asteroid between 0.5 and 1.5 metres wide, heating the rock to around 2,100C - hot enough to melt the surface of the asteroid and create a thrust which would nudge it off course."
Comment:
At the moment, our solar system is becoming quite an unpredictable environment as it is becoming highly charged, and some asteroids and comets are appearing as if from nowhere, three years is a long time.....
Pipes hung in the sea could help planet to 'heal itself'
The Independent, 27th September 2007
Our distinguished scientists are starting to look and sound desperate. This suggested attempt at geoengineering must be viewed with a high degree of skepticism. So we find, "Only by using the earth's own processes might we have a hope of getting climate change under control.
"We can't cure the planet, we haven't the power, but we just might be able to make it go into reverse phase and cure itself," Professor Lovelock announced yesterday."
Comment: Personally, the Earth has been here for billions of years, I trust it more than our scientists, distinguished or not.
Heavens above: Alton Towers bosses look at controlling the rain
Daily Mail, 28th August 2007
[...] They want to use a rain-seeding technique that encourages the heavens to open long before the threatening cumulonimbus gets too close to the theme park.
It involves firing silver iodide or dry ice into a cloud, simulating the natural salt, dust and other tiny particles in the atmosphere that help water droplets form.
The controversial process will be rolled out at next year's Olympic Games in Beijing to clear the polluted skies ready for a world audience.
It has become somewhat of a tradition in China to 'seed' clouds before public holidays in a bid to induce rain, disperse pollution and ensure clear blue skies.
It currently leads the world in cloud seeding and in the last five years has produced enough precipitation to fill the Yellow river, the country's second longest, four times over.
In the same period Chinese air force jets flew nearly 3,000 flights and sowed rain-making chemicals to bring down 210 billion cubic metres of water over three million square kilometres, nearly a third of China's territory.
Comment: Interesting article that explains the use of cloud seeding that encourages rain so that social events can be more certain of dry weather. Yet in the case of this theme park, they claim they do not want to be, "held hostage to the increasingly extreme weather conditions." I have news for them, the whole solar system is changing and humans are not helping the situation much on Earth either! Great comments from a 22-year-old student, who said: "What gives Alton Towers the right to play God with our weather?" "Anyway, what's the sense in stopping it raining when people head straight for the log flume?" Exactly!!
The shield of Ra: Could solar reflection save the planet?
CNN News, 19 June 2007
Geo-engineering
Of all these "whacky-but-workable" theories the one that has perhaps generated the most interest, both in terms of scientific plausibility and practical implementation, is that of solar reflection.
The basic concept is the same as that underpinning the "white roads" idea -- the development of a technology that can reflect a proportion of the sun's radiation away from the earth's surface and back out into space, thereby cooling the atmosphere and slowing, or even reversing the damaging effects of global climate change.
Several models have been put forward as to how such a feat of "geo-engineering" might actually be achieved, most involving the positioning of a reflective shield of some sort out in space.
As early as 1989, for instance, in an article entitled "Space-based Solar Shield to Offset Greenhouse Effect," James T. Early of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California, proposed siting a vast, 2000 km-wide glass deflecting panel at the "inner Lagrange point" between the Earth and the sun, the latter diverting the sun's rays away from the Earth's atmosphere.
Similarly in 1992 the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) put forward the idea of launching 55,000 "solar sails" into orbit around the Earth, each with an area of 100 square kilometers, the sails collectively producing the same effect as Early's single glass panel.
Comment: As I have pointed out before, if CO2 was the true cause of global warming then why are there proposals to put a shield in space?
"Personally, as a citizen not a scientist, I don't like geo-engineering because of the high environmental risk," Caldeira said in a recent interview with New Scientist magazine. "It is toying with poorly understood complex systems." Well these concerns have not stopped scientists in the past! The Earth has a natural shield against space radiation called the Van Allen Belts. Unfortunately, in the 50s and 60s military experiments were carried out with nuclear bombs, so now that we are getting inundated with space radiation, all of a sudden Earth needs a shield, do you get the picture?
Space shield to block radiation
BBC News News, 18 April 2007
British scientists are planning to see whether a Star Trek-style deflector shield could be built to protect astronauts from radiation.
They argue that magnetic shields could be deployed around spacecraft and on the surfaces of planets to deflect harmful energetic particles.
Several countries' space agencies have announced their intentions to resume human exploration of the Solar System.
Scientists hope to mimic the magnetic field which protects the Earth. [...]
"You don't need much of a magnetic field to hold off the solar wind. You could produce the shield 20-30 kilometres away from the spacecraft," explained Dr Ruth Bamford, from the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory in Didcot, UK, one of the scientists on the team.
Dr Mike Hapgood, from the Didcot-based research centre, told BBC News: "The nice thing is that magnet technology is really quite evolved here on Earth. The question is can you take it into space?'"
The team from Rutherford-Appleton plans to build an artificial magnetosphere in the laboratory. They would eventually like to fly a test satellite which would test the technology in space.
Comment: Well, our scientists are designing space shields for planets and astronants to venture into space. Funnily enough, humans have a natural space shield which can be built up using superconducting particles. Unfortunately, most people have no idea that they are going to be seriously in need of this fairly soon, as energetic particles continue to rain down on Earth.
Could Crazy Technology Save the Planet?
WiredNews.com: 15 March 2007
Comment: More bizarre schemes to geo-engineer our way out of the current planetary crisis and reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Ideas like artificial volcanoes to eject sulphates into the atmosphere, seeding the oceans with irondust to encourage plankton and algae to soak up more CO2 and the ironic suggestion of artificial trees! Are we seeing desperation or inventive ways to attract money that will be on the table if governments succeed in taxing us up to the hilt for the current warming trend that is ultimately due to the bombardment of energy from solar, cosmic and galactic sources?
Space Ring Could Shade Earth and Stop Global Warming
LiveScience.com: 27 June 2005
"A wild idea to combat global warming suggests creating an artificial ring of small particles or spacecrafts around Earth to shade the tropics and moderate climate extremes. There would be side effects, proponents admit. An effective sunlight-scattering particle ring would illuminate our night sky as much as the full Moon, for example. And the price tag would knock the socks off even a big-budget agency like NASA: $6 trillion to $200 trillion for the particle approach. Deploying tiny spacecraft would come at a relative bargain: a mere $500 billion tops."
Comment:
Crackpot idea to place small particles or satellites in space to cast a shade on Earth to stop global warming. Of cause this project would cost trillions of dollars. Well, since we have an estimated 100,000 pieces of junk in space, I would have thought there would be no need to spend any more money..... (This info is now out of date since the Chinese blew a satellite to pieces, see above.)
