"THE Ministry of Defence (MoD) has appealed for calm after a UFO was spotted over Woodford Green.
Two residents have contacted the Guardian saying they saw a strange object flying through the sky last weekend above the Winston Churchill statue on Woodford Green.
MoD spokeswoman Susan Coulthard said: "It's certainly common that people see something they don't understand. "There are many possible explanantions for such sightings, whether it is aircraft, ballons or other similar objects." 
" A scientist who mapped his genome and the genetic diversity of the oceans said Thursday he is creating a life form that feeds on climate-ruining carbon dioxide to produce fuel.
Geneticist Craig Venter disclosed his potentially world-changing "fourth-generation fuel" project at an elite Technology, Entertainment and Design conference in Monterey, California.
"We have modest goals of replacing the whole petrochemical industry and becoming a major source of energy," Venter told an audience that included global warming fighter Al Gore and Google co-founder Larry Page. "We think we will have fourth-generation fuels in about 18 months, with CO2 as the fuel stock." Simple organisms can be genetically re-engineered to produce vaccines or octane-based fuels as waste, according to Venter." 
Major news for spiritual alchemists! An international team led by Physics and Chemistry teams from the Faculty of Science and
Technology at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and directed by Professor
Jose Javier Saiz Garitaonandia, has achieved, by means of a controlled chemical process,
that atoms of gold, silver and copper - intrinsically non-magnetic (not attracted to a
magnet) - become magnetic. The article has been published in the February issue of the
prestigious international magazine in nanotechnology, Nanoletters (Vol.8, No. 2, 661-667
(2008)).
Still searching for the "dark" force! "Observations made with telescopes have repeatedly shown that dark matter exists. It is the stuff that holds together all cosmic structures, including our own Milky Way. The observation of WIMPs would finally reveal the underlying nature of this dark matter, which plays such a crucial role in the formation of galaxies and the evolution of our universe," says Joseph Dehmer, director of the Division of Physics for the National Science Foundation. The discovery of WIMPs would require extensions to the theoretical framework known as the standard model of particles and their forces."
"LISTEN closely, and you'll hear the Earth humming - in not just one note, but two. The source of this second signal is a mystery. For around a decade we've known about Earth's quiet "vertical" hum, probably caused by the steady thumping of deep waves on the ocean floor. Now a team in Germany has discovered a second "horizontal" note, too, and nobody knows what's causing this new signal." 
"Al Gore says the science on global warming is clear and there is a major problem. Vaclav Klaus, Czech president, contends that climate change forecasts are speculative and unreliable. Whose claims are scarier? Of course, Mr Klaus exaggerates (he is a politician) but if he is partly right, we should be more concerned, not less." "Mr Klaus is probably right that there are fewer certainties than many claim. Even commentators who support the conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change point to methodological weaknesses in its economics. A UK High Court judge recently required that a list of "scientific errors" be sent to schools that show Mr Gore’s remarkable polemic, An Inconvenient Truth – confirming the impression that the film goes some way beyond established facts (Mr Gore is also a politician). But we hardly need Mr Klaus to teach us that experts’ models can be incomplete and a strong consensus can be badly flawed."
"Evidence is growing this La Nina will be a longer term event. Most similar important La
Ninas are often multi year events (1949-1951,1954-1956, 1961-63, 1970-1972, 1973-1976,
1998-2001). Though the easternmost Pacific near South America has warmed at the surface as
the seasonal weakening of the tropical easterlies led to weakened upwelling, it is still
cold beneath." "La Ninas bring more drought and summer heat waves, landfalling hurricanes, large tornado outbreaks, spring floods, winter snows and cold outbreaks than their more famous counterpart, El Nino, which has dominated during the warm PDO era. A while back, Stan Changnon did an interesting analysis which I reported on recently here that suggests the era we have gone through since the late 1970s with dominant El Ninos was unusually benign with more benefits than damages and will be looked on as the golden era, a modern climate optimum. Even if all this is correct, you might expect the media and enviro-alarmists 'evidence' we are affecting our climate to morph from warming and ice melt to the climate extremes characteristic of La Ninas." 
"Extreme weather patterns have hit Australia with tropical cyclones, snow and heatwaves this month — but the weirdness is set to continue with an active monsoonal trough over north Queensland and a storm front heading for Sydney this evening." 
"The biggest earthquake in the UK for nearly 25 years has shaken homes across large parts of the country." 
"Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. " Massive power outages struck Florida on Tuesday afternoon, with power reported out from Miami to Jacksonville on the east coast and as far north as Tampa on the Gulf Coast, CNN reported, quoting police and utility officials. About 4.4 million customers across South Florida were affected, Florida Power and Light Co. officials reportedly said.
The outage struck shortly after 1 p.m. EST as scattered thunderstorms passed through the region, the CNN report said. But the cause of the outage was not immediately known." "The North American Electric Reliability Council said that as of 1:09 p.m., eight power plants were down -- a mix of fossil and nuclear power plants, according to CNN." 
"The airline said today: "GB Airways confirms that yesterday’s flight BA 6826 from Manchester to Paphos diverted to Istanbul due to a medical emergency on the flight deck.
"On landing, it was confirmed that the first officer (co-pilot) had died during the flight. At no time was the aircraft, passengers or crew in any danger." 
"Yesterday, something behind the sun's northeastern limb exploded, hurling a bright cloud into space. This could herald an active sunspot just over the horizon. If so, solar rotation will bring it into view this week." 
"Our hurricane dialog never seems to end, and hardly a week goes by without another article appearing in a major journal on the subject of global warming and hurricane activity. In recent weeks, two more major articles have been published adding to the overwhelming evidence that the hurricane – global warming link cannot be supported on theoretical or empirical grounds. "OSLO, Norway (AP) - A magnitude-6.2 earthquake, the largest ever recorded on Norwegian territory, hit off the Arctic Svalbard islands early Thursday, the national seismic monitoring center said. No casualties or damage were reported. The quake could have been catastrophic if it had hit a more densely populated area, said Conrad Lindholm, senior researcher of the seismic institute NORSAR. " 
"Astrophysicist Professor Bryan Gaensler led a team that has found that our galaxy - a flattened spiral about 100,000 light years across - is 12,000 light years thick, not the 6,000 light years that had been previously thought. Proving not all science requires big, expensive apparatus, Professor Gaensler and colleagues, Dr Greg Madsen, Dr Shami Chatterjee and PhD student Ann Mao, downloaded data from the internet and analysed it in a spreadsheet. "We were tossing around ideas about the size of the Galaxy, and thought we had better check the standard numbers that everyone uses. It took us just a few hours to calculate this for ourselves. We thought we had to be wrong, so we checked and rechecked and couldn't find any mistakes.""
"Recently, researchers from the University of Glasgow and the University of Bristol in the UK have discovered another unusual property of light – or, more accurately, the darkness within light. As the researchers explain, natural light fields are threaded by lines of darkness, which create optical vortices that appear as black points within the light. The group has modeled this phenomenon, and found that the lines of darkness exhibit fractal properties with Brownian (random) characteristics. Further, the characteristics of these optical vortices suggest universal properties, which could help connect different areas of physics. ...Interestingly, the researchers noted that these properties of optical vortices (the ratio of vortex lines to loops and their scale invariance) are very similar to the properties of cosmic strings, according to the cosmic string lattice model. The model describes the configuration of cosmic strings in the early universe – the very thin but very dense one-dimensional defects in space-time that could be responsible for the formation of galaxies. The researchers don’t think this similarity is likely to be coincidental. They suggest that these properties could be universal for all optical fields, and they plan to investigate the analogy further."
"The researchers compared the activity in the subjects’ brains as recorded by the fMRI machines to their reported responses on the AdSAM system. With several of the ads, they found the fMRI data and response converged on two of three measures — pleasure-displeasure and excitement-calm. Under the AdSAM system, these "bipolar dimensions" — as well as a third, dominance-submissiveness — form the foundation for more specific emotions.
Where the researchers compared the AdSAM data on pleasure-displeasure and excitement-calm to the fMRI data, they found simultaneous spikes in four different and highly localized areas of the brain. According to the article, the findings suggest "that human emotions are multidimensional, and that self-report techniques … correspond to a specific task but different functional regions of the brain. ...."Back in the 1950s, three psychologists found that all emotions could be measured in three dimensions," Morris said. "Now we have learned that this may be more than a method for reporting emotion. It may actually reflect the way creatures on this planet function – possibly exposing a direct link to predicting behavior."
"According to Turok, who teaches at Cambridge University, the Big Bang represents just one stage in an infinitely repeated cycle of universal expansion and contraction. Turok theorizes that neither time nor the universe has a beginning or end.
It's a strange idea, though Turok would say it's no stranger than the standard explanation of the Big Bang: a singular point that defies our laws of physics, where all equations go to infinity and "all the properties we normally use to describe the universe and its contents just fail." 
"There is, indeed, a design to life -- an evolutionary design," Miller said. "The structures in our bodies have changed over time, as have its functions. Scientists should embrace this concept of 'design,' and in so doing, claim for science the sense of orderly rationality in nature to which the anti-evolution movement has long appealed." 
"Bill Clinton's temper flared up again at weekend rallies in Ohio -- a must-win state for his wife's presidential campaign -- when he was confronted by anti-abortion protesters and a Barack Obama supporter. "With the invention of more powerful telescopes and our ability to place sensitive
detection apparatus into Earth orbit, astronomers are finding that the more simplistic
explanations from the past are in need of revision. Rather than space being permeated with
cold, dark clouds of hydrogen gas, alone, there are vast areas where "hot plasma" is
transporting power over many parsecs." 
"Superconductors are superior to ordinary metal conductors such as copper because current doesn't lose energy as wasteful heat as it flows through them, thus allowing larger current densities. Once a current is set in motion in a closed loop of superconducting material, it will flow forever." 
"Some of the largest institutional investors in the world yesterday called on the US Congress to introduce a mandatory national policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% below 1990 levels by 2050.
It is the latest move that underlines the way business leaders have dramatically seized the environmental agenda and are now pushing politicians to tackle global warming." 
"Filamentary Birkeland currents transport electrical energy from the Sun to Earth and the rest of the Solar System. Could ancient human beings have seen this phenomenon visible in their skies?" 
"On January 20, 2008, three members of an independent hip-hop show crew, Movement Television, were on their way to a music event in Tampa, heading south on I-275, when they noticed something unusual in the sky to the west." 
"So far scientists have teleported single photons — a packet of light — across miles. But that's "a far cry from teleporting a person," Farhi said. To begin with, measuring the quantum state of an object essentially destroys it. Ouch. Next, your average person is made of more than 10^27 atoms — a 1 with 27 zeroes behind it — and each atom is made of subatomic particles such as protons, neutrons and electrons. Measuring the quantum states of all of a person's particles would likely take a long, long time." 
"When Guy Hoelzer runs computer simulations of organisms living in the modeling equivalent of a featureless plain, he sees them break into different species -- even though there's no reason for natural selection to take place.
That preliminary but tantalizing finding hints at some larger phenomenon driving the mechanisms of neo-Darwinian evolution. Hoelzer thinks the phenomenon is self-organization: combine energy with complex networked interaction and order will emerge." 
"This was the dramatic scene as the world's largest statue of Jesus was hit by lightning.
The bolt parted the thunderclouds over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to strike Christ the Redeemer. The statue is 130ft tall, is made of 700 tons of reinforced concrete and stands atop the 2,296ft Corcovado mountain overlooking the city." 
"These bugs can sense where they are by changes in their environment," said Cheryl Nickerson, from the Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology at Arizona State University (ASU). "The minute they sense a different environment, they change their genetic machinery so they can survive." 
"The idea is similar to the "ether," an invisible medium that physicists once thought light waves travelled through. Einstein's relativity did away with the need for such a medium, but cosmologists have recently found that an ether-like substance can mimic dark matter.The presence of such a substance changes the way gravity works. This is most noticeable in the distant outskirts of a galaxy, where the galaxy's gravitational pull would be expected to be small, but the ether makes it much stronger.
The ether "effectively softens space-time in regions of low [gravitational] acceleration making it more sensitive to the presence of mass than usual," Ferreira explained.

"Solar activity comes in regular cycles, but the latest one is refusing to start. Sunspots have all but vanished, and activity is suspiciously quiet. The last time this happened was 400 years ago -- and it signaled a solar event known as a "Maunder Minimum," along with the start of what we now call the "Little Ice Age."" 
"Mysterious booms known as "Seneca Guns" have been reported in the region for centuries. The name comes from a similar phenomenon in New York and Connecticut.
Legend has it that the Seneca Indians are getting their revenge with the guns that Europeans used to displace them.
More scientific explanations say the boom of the guns comes from earthquakes, material falling off the continental shelf, or pockets of hot air exploding like balloons.
"We have no idea what it was," said Michael Ross, the meteorologist at the weather service in Wilmington."
"All planets travel in an ellipse around the sun, but the shape of that ellipse oscillates," he explains. "When the Earth's orbit is more elliptical, the planet spends more time farther away from the sun, and the Earth gets less sunlight over the course of the year. These periods of more-elliptical orbits are separated by about 100,000 years. Ice ages occur about every 100,000 years, and they line up exactly with this change in the Earth's elliptical shape." "Despite what many people believe, seasons on Earth are not determined by the nearness of the northern and summer hemispheres to the sun. "Orbital parameters of Earth, the sun and moon and the planets have great effects on ice ages and other climatic changes," he says. "Those major events are driven by very small changes in the planetary orbital functions."" 
"It has long been known that the inner core of the earth, a sphere consisting of a solid mass with a radius of about 1,200 km, is mainly made up of iron. However, seismic observations have shown that elastic waves pass more rapidly through this core in directions that are parallel to the earth’s axis of rotation than in directions parallel to the equator-a phenomenon that has not been previously explained. At the high temperatures that prevail in the core of the earth, these waves should pass at the same speed regardless of their direction. In the present study, scientists from Uppsala University and KTH present an explanation for this puzzling characteristic. ...Initially, in 2003, they published strong theoretical proof that the earth’s core assumes the so-called body-centered cubic crystal structure at high temperatures-a structure that despite its high degree of symmetry evinces a surprisingly high level of elastic anisotropy, that is, its elastic properties are contingent on direction. This theory about the crystal structure directly contradicted the then prevailing view, but since then the theory has found both experimental and theoretical support." 
"DNA has been found to have a bizarre ability to put itself together, even at a distance, when according to known science it shouldn't be able to. Explanation: None, at least not yet.
Scientists are reporting evidence that contrary to our current beliefs about what is possible, intact double-stranded DNA has the "amazing" ability to recognize similarities in other DNA strands from a distance. Somehow they are able to identify one another, and the tiny bits of genetic material tend to congregate with similar DNA. The recognition of similar sequences in DNA’s chemical subunits, occurs in a way unrecognized by science. There is no known reason why the DNA is able to combine the way it does, and from a current theoretical standpoint this feat should be chemically impossible." 
"The unprecedented scale, cost, and human impacts of China's freak month of snowstorms, its worst in 50 years, herald a need for the world to get ready for 'new kinds of disasters,' according to Sálvano Briceño, Director of the secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR). 'So-called 'freak weather' is becoming more common,' says Briceño, 'and reducing vulnerability to these unexpected extremes must be a top priority for governments.'" 
"...cosmic rays of the sort pouring down to Earth from exploding galaxies, neutron stars and other energetic events. These are largely shielded by the atmosphere, but more than enough get through to sea level to cause problems. Engagingly, this also means that SER goes up with altitude - you'll get five times as many just 2,600 feet above sea level, and if you're living in Denver (5,280 feet ASL) expect ten times as many.
Cosmic rays are now the biggest source of soft errors - and they're common enough that on average, a gigabyte of RAM will have one soft error every couple of weeks." Why worry about computer crashes, when you have your own DNA to consider.
"Two senior Church of England Bishops have called on people to give up carbon rather than chocolate for Lent. They want to drive home the climate change message to churchgoers by encouraging them to cut their energy use." 
"Squeeze a crystal of manganese oxide hard enough, and it changes from an electrical insulator to a conductive metal. In a report published online this week by the journal Nature Materials, researchers use computational modeling to show why this happens.
The results represent an advance in computer modeling of these materials and could shed light on the behavior of similar minerals deep in the Earth, said Warren Pickett, professor of physics at UC Davis and an author on the study." 
"On January 26, 2008 residents from Orange and LA County, Anaheim, and Brea, California were witness to a very unusual but spectacular UFO event. Numerous people watched as an object fell from the night sky and to their amazement it came to a complete stop while in flight. Most folks thought at first they were witnessing a meteor falling to earth until the object stopped and hovered, leaving everyone scratching their heads. While these objects sat and moved around the sky, aircraft were seen and appeared to be checking out these objects. As just about all of the eyewitnesses mentioned to me, they are baffled at no mention in any of the newspapers over the event, or media in general. I must admit, that makes me wonder why not, when so many people witnessed this really unusual event in the night sky."
"One major conclusion that should be reached from the unpredicted wide ranging severe cold and snow this winter, is that multi-decadal global climate models have demonstrated no skill in predicting such regional events which clearly have a major impact on society and the environment." 
"Language evolves in sudden leaps, according to a statistical study of three major language groups. The finding challenges the slow-and-steady model held by many linguists and matches evidence that genetic evolution follows a similar path." "Pagel says languages may diverge suddenly when a subgroup separates from a larger population, to create a unique social identity. Similarly, genetic change may occur suddenly as genes try to adapt quickly to a new environment." 
"A study published in Science Magazine today presents new evidence supporting the abiotic theory for the origin of oil, which asserts oil is a natural product the Earth generates constantly rather than a "fossil fuel" derived from decaying ancient forests and dead dinosaurs."

Well, certain government organisations are prepared for the worst, but I wonder how many ordinary people understand the need to prepare for a total "global calamity".

from simple one-celled bacteria to complex human beings. Now Northwestern University
researchers report they have used DNA as the blueprint, contractor and construction worker
to build a three-dimensional structure out of gold, a lifeless material."
"New observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope have revealed that galaxies on their
way to densely populated galaxy clusters on cosmic filaments, are likely to form new
stars." "Our observations show that the fraction of starburst galaxies in the
filaments is more than double the number of starburst galaxies inside the cluster region,”
said Dario Fadda of the Caltech in Pasadena, US, who led a team that used Spitzer to
observe the area around the cluster, which is 42 million light years from Earth.
"The new Spitzer findings will provide valuable insights into how galaxies grow and change
as they leave cosmic suburbia for the big cities," he added."
"MOSCOW (AP) - A faulty control cable caused the glitch that subjected two Russian
cosmonauts and Malaysia's first space traveler to a rough trip back to Earth, according to
a report Tuesday." "The Soyuz landing capsule carrying Russians cosmonauts Fyodor
Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov, and Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, of Malaysia, went down on a
steeper-than-usual descent trajectory, the so-called ballistic descent. It subjected the
crew to 8.5 times the force of gravity instead of the usual four times the force of
gravity." 
"Scientists discovered that the magnetic strength of magnetite -- the most abundant
magnetic mineral on Earth -- declines drastically when put under
pressure.""Magnetite is found in small quantities in certain bacteria, in brains of
some birds and insects, and even in humans," commented Yang Ding, the study’s lead
author with the Carnegie-led High-Pressure Synergetic Consortium.... There is intense
scientific interest in its properties."
"The team simulated the solar wind in the lab using an intense beam of charged high-energy
particles. They placed a powerful magnet in this beam to investigate how effective it was
at deflecting the particles. Bamford said it worked perfectly. The pinky glow of the
plasma beam curved around the magnet just as the team had predicted. "It seems like quite
a simple thing to do and it is, but what we are trying to do is put numbers on how
effective this is," said Bamford. "I think a lot of people in space science didn't
necessarily believe it could work as well as it did - and it worked superbly well."
"While Dr Roe's work may appear controversial, he is starting to garner the support of
eminent academics such as Professor Brian Josephson, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist from
Cambridge University, who says: "The experiments have been designed to rule out luck and
chance. I consider the evidence for remote viewing to be pretty clear-cut."
The military is also taking a keen interest. The Ministry of Defence takes the phenomena
