Given the ongoing controversy over global warming the question of whether humans can change Earth's climate is a familiar one. Lost in the fight over anthropogenic global warming is a more subtle and possibly more important question—how has climate changed people. In recent decades, the fossil record of hominin evolution and behavior, though still incomplete, has improved greatly. Triggered by a recent National Research Council (NRC) report, a perspective article in the journal Science poses the question, “did climate change shape human evolution?”

One fact is often overlooked when it comes to discussing humanity's place in nature, and that is that man is a part of nature. Indeed humans are a product of nature and the ever changing living system that controls the climate of planet Earth. In the brief for the NRC report “Understanding Climate’s Influence on Human Evolution,” the relationship that every species, including man, has with nature is spelled out:

All living things interact with the earth system—the combinations of land, atmosphere, and oceans—that make up the planet’s environment. As the earth system has changed over time, individual species have responded to these changes. In some cases, species have moved to new locations. In other cases, they have remained and adapted to the environmental changes, and sometimes this has led to the formation of new species. In some cases, species have become extinct.

Finally the men of the Third Age underwent physical mutations, exactly as if they had been exposed to radiation by an atomic explosion, since their race disappeared and was replaced by the 'Race of the Fourth Age.'

Sounds like a new rift valley is forming. This is where new continental mass is added from the magma, much like volcanos, but in linear form. Eventually this can lead to land splitting, much like Baja California giving way to the formation of the Sea of Cortez. Interesting...

A seven-year-old Serbian boy named Bogdan is making international news for an apparently paranormal (though not terribly useful) ability.

According to several sources including MSNBC and The Daily Mail, Bogdan is magnetic. Household objects such as spoons, knives, and forks cling to his skin with almost supernatural ease. The idea that a person could generate a strong magnetic field is bizarre, but what’s even stranger is that other things stick to him too, such as small plates, small flat glass objects, and even a remote control.

Bogdan is only the latest in a long line of people who have claimed this ability. Yet there is no evidence that Bogdan, or anyone else, is “magnetic.”

In short, the whales use the Earth's magnetic field for navigation and we know for a fact that geomagnetic conditions on the planet are now chaotic. There are suggestions of the military use of sonar but New Zealand also has the highest levels of whales being stranded in the world and maybe this means that in this region, the Earth's magnetic field is particularly prone to disturbances. A world map of magnetic anomalies does seem to indicate this, see Map: The magnetic Earth There are a few scientists who think that whale beachings indicate there is some kind of disturbance in the Earth's EM environment and that this heralds a massive Earthquake, see Did whale beaching foretell disaster? Also, there is a more mundane theory that proposed by Cambridge professor in the 1980s, a biologist named Margaret Klinowskam who first discovered a correlation between whales beaching themselves and magnetic lineation/anomalies, see Biomagnetics: Species Association with Earth's Magnetic Field.

SPACE WEATHER IN A GADGET-DRIVEN WORLD: Authorities in Washington DC caused a stir over the weekend when they announced at the annual AAAS meeting that high-tech modern society is increasingly vulnerable to solar storms.

"The last time we had a maximum in the solar cycle, the world was a very different place," noted NOAA administrator Jane Lubchenco. "Cell phones are now ubiquitous [and we] rely on them for so many different things." Others noted a myriad of GPS-dependent technologies that could be brought down by a strong solar flare. This is old news to many readers of spaceweather.com. Nevertheless, the web is abuzz with reports from the meeting.

"A point to remember is that the ionosphere is an active electrical shield protecting the planet from the constant bombardment of high-energy particles from space. This conducting plasma, along with Earth's magnetic field, traps the electrical plasma of space and holds it back from going directly to the earth's surface, says Charles Yost of Dynamic Systems, Leicester, North Carolina. HAARP zaps the ionosphere where it is relatively unstable.

"If the ionosphere is greatly disturbed, the atmosphere below is subsequently disturbed."97

It is reasonable to expect Earth's relatively thin atmosphere of insulating gas (water vapor) to be mechanically pushed and pulled by the surrounding electrical forces, Yost says. Electrical currents in the ionosphere are said to be 100 times larger than those produced lower down at any moment by all the world's thunderstorms. Yost concludes that electrical forces should be included along with thermodynamics, gravity waves and effects of Earth's rotation, as causes of weather variations."

Possible Secondary CME Impact - A secondary CME shock appears to have swept past the ACE spacecraft just after 10:30 UTC Friday. The solar wind spiked to near 700 km/s. Minor Geomagnetic Storm conditions are possible at high latitudes. Be on the lookout for Aurora if you are in northern regions and dark outside.

CME SPARKS AURORAS: One and possibly two CMEs hit Earth during the early hours of Feb. 18th, creating a gusty solar wind environment around our planet and fueling a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm. During the storm-peak, auroras were visible over Canada despite interference from the full moon:

"The auroras were very colorful," reports photographer Sylvain Serre from Salluit, an Inuit village in Nunavik, Canada. "It was worth going out in the cold weather (-30 C) to see the show."

Although the storm has subsided, it could flare up again as the solar wind continues to swirl around Earth. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras. Source: spaceweather.com

MYSTERIOUS SUN HALOES: Most sun haloes are circles. They surround the sun when sunbeams hit ice crystals in the air. The haloes this week in Finland, however, were not circular. Olli Leivo sends this picture from Lahti in southern Finland: More images: #1, #2, #3, #4

"Finland has had a spate of elliptical halos over the last few days produced by ice crystals precipitating out of low clouds. The ones Leivo photographed are superb," says atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley. "Elliptical halos are rare and we do not understand how they are formed. A popular theory is that hexagonal plate-shaped crystals with very blunt pyramidal ends make them. But ray tracing simulations using these crystals do not reproduce the halo’s fine detail properly. Moreover, these crystals are physically unrealistic because crystal faces follow lines of atoms in the crystal lattice – blunt pyramidal ends do not! The mystery remains."

From the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, word that our recent X-class (and lesser magnitude) solar flares have released three Coronal Mass Ejections (CME’s) toward Earth:

The calm before the storm. Three CMEs are enroute, all a part of the Radio Blackout events on February 13, 14, and 15 (UTC). The last of the three seems to be the fastest and may catch both of the forerunners about mid to late day tomorrow, February 17. Watch this space for updates on the impending — G2, possibly periods of G3 — geomagnetic storming.

"This very bright sundog appeared on the morning of Feb 9th--very rare in our part of the world," says photographer David Blackburn.

Sundogs are formed by ice crystals in the air. Hexagonal plate-shaped crystals flutter down from the sky like leaves falling from trees. Aerodynamic forces align their flat sides parallel to the ground, and when sunlight hits a patch of well-aligned crystals at the right distance from the sun, voila!--a sundog. Look for sundogs around sunrise and sunset when the low-hanging sun is well positioned to shine through the fluttering ice. Yes, even in Texas.

As we have discussed many times the ‘real’ indicator of solar activity is the the F10.7 microwave flux. The flux is predicted to top ~120 in mid 2013 and seems well on its way to that. The sunspot number is falling progressively below the sunspot number corresponding to the microwave flux. This may be an indication of the Livingston & Penn effect at work. If L&P are correct this discrepancy will grow worse [potentially with no visible spots at all], and the sunspot number will be rather useless as a measure of solar activity, so Hathaway will have to continually adjust the predicted SSN down, down, down. Luckily, the sunspot number is rarely used in operational practice [e.g. for calculation of satellite drag]. Instead, the F10.7 flux is used for that, so as long as we stick to the flux there should be no problems.

There has been a lot of worry and hype on this subject. Part of it is fueled by the silly “2012? thing. Some it has been fueled by people who had been primed for “space storms” in solar cycle 24, such as in this Fox News video:

Comment: Even Anthony Watts is getting bothered because people are starting to panic about the state of Earth's magnetic field and the looming date of 2012. This article is also in response to the article at Helium.com Magnetic polar shifts cause massive global super storms.Well, this is a long article with all the usual information (some of it is wrong too) but it's worth a browse even just for the hilarious photo near the end that should make anyone laugh. However, I can't agree with Watts who claims that just because the sun is quiet and a low number of sunspots is predicted means everything will be OK. There is the major issue of fundamental changes in the condition of Earth's magnetic shielding (magnetosphere) like the fact it occasionally disappears (breaches) and we are getting occasional mega blasts from deep space. (Actually, I am not sure if he understands what is going on with the breaches loading up the magnetosphere for some serious megablasts... think gas build up and then boom!) The Earth is now highly charged so it's what happens when we reach a critical tipping point that we have to consider. Watts fails to mention that the non-dipole components of Earth's magnetic field (aprox. 10%?) are increasing. The apparent growth in the non-dipole parts of the Earth's magnetic field does not seem directly linked to solar activity but must be considered if a magnetic excursion of reversal is on the cards and Earth's main dipole magnetic field completely breaks down. What amazes me is that nobody wants to talk about the impact on humans and mental health in an unstable electromagnetic environment, it's almost like people simple don't have a clue that all humans have a direct link with Earth's magnetic field...

CLOSE APPROACHING ASTEROID: A small (4-5 meter) asteroid discovered earlier today by R. A. Kowalski of the Catalina Sky Survey will pass by Earth on Feb. 4th around 19:40UT at a distance of 11855 km. 2011 CQ1 will not hit Earth, but it will pass well inside the Clarke Belt of geosynchronous satellites. A geostationary orbit (or Geostationary Earth Orbit - GEO) is a geosynchronous orbit directly above the Earth's equator (0° latitude), with a period equal to the Earth's rotational period and an orbital eccentricity of approximately zero. An object in a geostationary orbit appears motionless, at a fixed position in the sky, to ground observers. Communications satellites and weather satellites are often given geostationary orbits, so that the satellite antennas that communicate with them do not have to move to track them, but can be pointed permanently at the position in the sky where they stay. Due to the constant 0° latitude and circularity of geostationary orbits, satellites in GEO differ in location by longitude only.

The notion of a geosynchronous satellite for communication purposes was first published in 1928 (but not widely so) by Herman Potocnik.[1] The idea of a geostationary orbit was first disseminated on a wide scale in a 1945 paper entitled "Extra-Terrestrial Relays — Can Rocket Stations Give Worldwide Radio Coverage?" by British science fiction writer Arthur C. RECORD-SETTING ASTEROID: Tiny asteroid 2011 CQ1 buzzed Earth on Feb. 4th even closer than we thought. According to JPL's Near Earth Object Program office, the meter-wide space rock was only 5480 km (0.85 Earth radii) over the Pacific Ocean at closest approach. That makes it the nearest non-impacting object in their catalog. The encounter was so close, Earth's gravity altered the course of the asteroid by a whopping 60 degrees. GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: NOAA forecasters estimate a 60% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on Feb. 3rd when a coronal mass ejection is due to hit Earth's magnetic field. In 2007, two participants describe people vomiting and seeing at least one person who was unconscious. The two nuclear superpowers both shot down their own satellites using sophisticated missiles in separate show of strength, the files suggest.

The American Government was so incensed by Chinese actions in space that it privately warned Beijing it would face military action if it did not desist.

The Chinese carried out further tests as recently as last year, however, leading to further protests from Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, secret documents show.

Beijing justified its actions by accusing the Americans of developing an “offensive” laser weapon system that would have the capability of destroying missiles before they left enemy territory.

I am an video editor (some, perhaps would even say skilled) with 25 years experience of editing tv programmes and documentaries. The first thing to remember is that all documentaries are fiction. They tell a story, predetermined by the producer. ‘Meet the Skeptics’ was a great example of clumsy, heavy handed storytelling. Nothing more. The most telling techniques include the way Monckton was seldom given more than 10 seconds to say anything, with cutaways covering obvious edits in his talking in order to make it seem like he is saying something he probably isn’t. It’s easy. I do it everyday, though I tend to do it to enhance understanding not to misrepresent. On the other hand, Monckton’s detractors were given free reign to speak with 30, 40, 45 seconds of screen time to expound their ideas and make their point.

SNOW SPIRALS: As a winter storm of historic proportions prepares to sweep across the USA later this week, midwesterners should be alert for some unaccustomed sights. One of them is snow spirals. Michael French photographed this specimen in Frederick, Maryland, on Jan. 29th:

"I call them Karra Spirals, after my wife Karra Strickland who discovered them in our yard," says French. "They were all over town, spiraling down the braided metal guy-wires on telephone poles. Here's the curious thing: The wires were spun clockwise, while the snow formations were spun anti-clockwise. The hardened snow spirals were rotated opposite of the metal wire's weave. We also noticed that spirals near the top of the wires were longer (~1 meter) than spirals at the bottom (0.1 - 0.3 meters)--perhaps because of gravity?"

Indeed, the changing wavelength of the spiral suggests gravity played a role in their formation. This could be how heavy snow sags under its own weight when it clings to a braided wire. Why the spirals should oppose the braid, however, is not obvious. Readers with explanations are invited to submit them for consideration.

3. Snow slips down telephone wire due to gravity to generate a cone shape.
4. Spiraling energies quickly arrive to sculpt the snow by melting it slightly to create the spiral.
5. The sculpted spiral is then refrozen very quickly to become 'hardened' snow.

"These light pillars are not just rare, they are exceptional!" declares atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley. "Ordinary pillars are produced by plate-shaped ice crystals roughly half way between you and the light source. These ones are different. Their rarely seen flared tops show that they were made by column-shaped crystals drifting slowly downwards and aligned horizontal by air resistance."

"The flares are a form of the upper tangent arcs that we sometimes see in daytime halo displays," he continues. "But even more exotic, some flares have a second one nested within them! Some ice crystal columns do not rotate but instead keep two of their prism faces improbably horizontal to give us the very uncommon Parry arcs of solar halo displays. The nested flares here are amazing and probably the light halo equivalent of Parry arcs."

Michio Kaku on Fox Business: Massive solar flare in the years 2012/2013 could throw us back 100 years

Many devices emit a signal, made up of electromagnetic waves, which could potentially interfere with the plane's own electronic system.

Bill Strauss, an engineer who has investigated the use of electronic items by passengers, described the situation as "worrisome".

He told the New York Times: “A plane is designed to the right specs, but nobody goes back and checks if it is still robust.

"Then there are the outliers — a cellphone that’s been dropped and abused, or a battery that puts out more than it’s supposed to, and avionics that are more susceptible to interference because gaskets have failed. And boom, that’s where you get interference. It would be a perfect storm that would combine to create an aviation accident.”

A curious sidelight to this issue can be found in an entry in Harper’s Encyclopedia, stating that in “Eastern mysticism the MIBs have a parallel in the ‘Brothers of the Shadow,’ evil beings who try to prevent occult students from learning the great truth.”

I just love how many in the astrophysicist community were predicting a quiet, delayed SC24 5-6 years ago, but of course were never listened to then nor now. They are becoming correct by the day through the process of comparing observational records against their hypotheses, yet the Hansenist NASA among others can move the goalposts monthly and still be the ‘go to’ voice and remain totally unapproachable when it comes to criticism of their failed predictions. In the meditative state of one-pointedness (also known as "hot" meditation or "active" meditation under the Newberg-Aquili model) or in qigong exercises, a person opens himself or herself up to absorb energy from the environment. SHC – "Lightning Discharge" Hypothesis Receives Support

Plasma metaphysics' "lightning discharge" hypothesis, proposed in this Jay Alfred's article Spontaneous Human Combustion and Electrical Discharges in the Subtle Body (see above) published on April 16, 2007 has received further support from recent research. In the article, Jay Alfred proposed that spontaneous human combustion is caused by electrical discharges, similar to lightning discharges, within the body. The article states, "A bolt of lightning is an electrical discharge within this system. According to plasma metaphysics, the same phenomenon that occurs in space and on Earth can occur within our subtle bodies... The energies of our subtle (high energy) magma bodies far exceed anything the biomolecular body can withstand. "

In December 2007 researchers at the University of Michigan discovered, to their surprise, "electric fields inside cells as strong as those produced in lightning bolts". However, "scientists are not clear as to what causes these strong fields or what they might mean."

Project Hessdalen was established in 1983 after a wave of UFO sightings in central Norway in the Hessdalen Valley. Hessdalen, the sight of mysterious lights witnessed by local residents for over a hundred years. In 1998, the world’s first UFO observatory built in Hessdalen. Through the years, numerous investigations and studies of the mysterious lights by scientists and researchers from Norway, Sweden, Italy, and France.

On the internet a paper published in 2005 by Assistant professor Bjørn Gitle Hauge at the østfold University College in Norway. Hauge’s paper, 10 Years of Scientific Research of the Hessdalen Phenomena. Hauge’s paper on the mysterious lights in Hessdalen, the investigations, research, and the world’s first ‘UFO’ observatory, ‘bluebox’, built in Hessdalen.

This is just another fake linkage to 'global warming'. In the northern hemisphere the sun is at its highest in the sky on any day when it is due south. It follows that on the day that the sun first peeps over the horizon for locations within the arctic circle it will be due south (the corollary is the midnight sun in the summer, when the sun at its lowest point is due north).

On the day the sun peeps above the horizon it will light up the whole sea in its direction - its light will be glancing across the top of it. Now, if you are actually in the town of Ilulissat you can't see the horizon to the south because of a 114m hill in the way, so let's assume you climb the hill or move a few kilometres to get a better view. From there you have a view across the SEA to the horizon formed by the SEA to the south south west, and a view across distant mountains due south which are NOT covered by glaciers. Check it out on the map.

The hypothesis that this could be due to melting of glaciers which are not even in the line of sight is either rank ignorance or an outright lie. Solar 'noon' when the sun is at its highest and crosses the meridian is at around 12.33pm local time. Now, at its highest point on January 11 the sun is 0.4 degrees below the ideal horizon (assuming a perfect line of sight to a perfect horizon).

The diameter of the sun subtends 0.53 degrees in the sky, so on January 11 it was nearly a whole sun's diameter below an ideal horizon. There is no way that a 'change in the horizon' is possible below the ideal horizon (formed by dead flat land or sea), so that is not an explanation at all, no matter what that silly scientist suggests. The inhabitants of Ilulissat certainly did NOT see the sun above any horizon on January 11, so the report is nonsense. Find a proper explanation such as refraction rather than repeating silly claims manufactured by climate change fanatics.

A Nobel Prize winning biologist has ignited controversy after publishing details of an experiment in which a fragment of DNA appeared to ‘teleport’ or imprint itself between test tubes.

According to a team headed by Luc Montagnier, previously known for his work on HIV and AIDS, two test tubes, one of which contained a tiny piece of bacterial DNA, the other pure water, were surrounded by a weak electromagnetic field of 7Hz.

Eighteen hours later, after DNA amplification using a polymerase chain reaction, as if by magic the DNA was detectable in the test tube containing pure water.

Oddly, the original DNA sample had to be diluted many times over for the experiment to work, which might explain why the phenomenon has not been detected before, assuming that this is what has happened.

Yet, we find the respected metaphysician Tom Kenyon, who describes himself as "Neo-pagan Tibetan Buddhist and part-time Taoist", with forty years experience as a meditator, who believes that many practicing meditators use it as a drug and are getting stoned! He says that this means that if they don't meditate, they get depressed because they have become dependent on the psychoactive substances produced by the brain during certain types of meditation. These people have found a way to sedate the mind, thus dulling their emotional pain but they are not obtaining any kind of enlightenment!

The worst fire in Israel’s history has been the cause of some embarrassment to Greenpeace and other global warming activists when some uncomfortable facts emerged recently.

Late last year Israel’s worst ever forest fire was blazing out of control, destroying homes and releasing untold quantities of Co2 into the atmosphere. Over 5,000 hectares of forest were utterly destroyed, and experts say it will be half a century before the forest gets back to anything like its former state.

Greenpeace lost no time, of course, in pointing the finger squarely at global warming, and issued a press release, demanding Israel abandon construction of a new coal power station, and calling for all comrades to join the “international struggle”:

However, it didn’t have much to say following an investigation by Israel’s fire service which discovered that the fire was started by a global warming activist at a Rainbow Camp. As the Jerusalem Post reported:

The cause of this particular fire was, sadly enough, the good intentions of a participant in the Rainbow Festival that was being held at the site. For ecological reasons, she burned toilet paper she had used so as not to leave it in nature, and in normal circumstances, that would have been the thing to do. However, due to the strong winds and the unseasonable hot air, the dry grasses caught on fire immediately, and the fire spread in four different directions simultaneously.

Airline frequent fliers are at greater risk of developing long term radiation poisoning from “solar space storms” or flare activity from the Sun, a new study warns.

Researchers found passengers faced the “hazard” of space radiation, which created unhealthy levels of exposure while flying at “typical cruise altitudes” of 40,000 feet. Experts warned passengers could be subjected to increasing risk to cancer due to such radiation levels.

World governments should prepare a co-ordinated action plan in case Earth is contacted by aliens, according to scientists.

Scientists argue that a branch of the UN must be given responsibility for "supra-Earth affairs" and formulate a plan for how to deal with extraterrestrials, should they appear.

The comments are part of an extraterrestrial-themed edition of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A published today. In it, scientists examine all aspects of the search for extraterrestrial life, from astronomy and biology to the political and religious fallout that would result from alien contact.

"Again, it should be mentioned that there is no possibility of accounting for the energy of the particles as a result of 'magnetic merging' or of 'magnetic field-line reconnection', or any other mechanism which implies changing magnetic fields in the region of acceleration. In the region of the double layer, the magnetic field during the explosive transient phase is almost constant and cannot supply the required energy (of course, the secondary effects of the explosion also cause changes in the magnetic field)." Golub may believe that this sort of plasma behavior is "impossible" to explain, but Hannes Alfv'en explained this behavior 25 years ago. The atmosphere of the sun is electrically active and it interacts with the electromagnetic fields of space.   Currents ebb and flow, particularly in the corona.  As soon as the electric currents that are flowing through a coronal loops stop flowing, say for instance the electric current seeks a shorter path of lesser resistance through the plasma, the suspended loop will deteriorate rapidly, and it will come crashing back to the surface. [...]

As Alfven explained from his work in plasma physics, certain types of plasma behaviors simply cannot be be properly modeled or properly understood without considering the electrical flow patterns that are traveling through the plasma. Alfv'en warned the mainstream community during his acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize about trying to mathematically oversimplify every plasma behavior, and trying to model every plasma transaction as a purely "magnetic" event.

The Movie - 'The Core'. A Warning?

Considered a mystery for many years, punch hole clouds appear on rare occasions all over the world, sometimes attracting widespread attention, e.g., the famous Moscow UFO cloud of 2009. Recently meteorologists have penetrated the mystery: punch holes form when airplanes fly through thin layers of high altitude clouds. If water droplets in the cloud are supercooled (below freezing but still liquid), they can suddenly turn to snow when shocked by the passage of the plane. This mini-snowstorm occurs over a circular area much wider than the airplane itself.

Not all flights through banks of clouds will produce snow. According to Wired Magazine, only about 7.8 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered with clouds at the right elevation for supercooled droplets to form. Because jet aircraft don’t generally cruise at those altitudes, they may only form hole-punch clouds when they take off or land.

The apparition of three rare cloud-holes in one small area suggests a busy airspace around Myrtle Beach. Indeed, the Myrtle Beach International Airport is just miles from where the photo was taken. Or maybe punch hole clouds are a bit of a mystery after all.

The British Medical Journal has devoted an editorial to stating that an article published in popular medical journal The Lancet in 1998 linking childhood vaccination with autism “was in fact an elaborate fraud.”

The Lancet had already retracted the article by Andrew Wakefield early last year, but BMJ now sought to totally discredit the “study”, which led to a decline in the triple vaccination of measles, mumps and rubella in Britain as well as in the United States and Australia.

Sadly, despite the strength of the BMJ articles - brought on by the work of Sunday Times investigative journalist Brian Deer - there will still be people who will not only ignore it but view it as further evidence of the conspiracy.

It also goes without saying that The Lancet has a responsibility for the Wakefield paper (he’s no longer a doctor by the way, barred from medical practice on the basis of financial conflict and unethical treatment of children) because it made the serious mistake of publishing this quackery in the first place.

Comment: The first comment posted here refers to quackery which is quite amazing when you consider the amount of time and effort that has been given to denouncing alternative methods of healing as "quackery". The sad thing is that most people still believe that the scientific world is run with integrity, but insiders know that this notion is a long way from the truth. We now have websites dedicated to exposing scientific fraud, but there is still the problem of scientists ignoring observational data/scientific analysis that does not fit the paradigm, to perpetuate a consensus view that is wrong. So, besides the climate of fraud that was so completely revealed in the Climategate saga, there is the everyday issue of the perpetuation of out of date and misleading theories. I was stunned to recently find that the common theory of the evolution of the human brain has been overturned, but even more shocked to find that someone had boldy made the claim in the 1920s that the evidence showed that the Darwinian inspired theory of the EVOLUTIONARY LAYERS OF THE HUMAN BRAIN did not match the evidence. Darwin's theory of evolution has so many holes, that the ship has in reality already sunk, but the theory is now such a powerful meme in the human collective that many scientists still cling to the hope of some proof and hence the repeated announcements of "the missing link" between humans and animals, like the recent Ida fossil which was quickly dismissed as another hoax. Now we are left with all the texts books that have been written and even laws that Darwin's Theory of Evolution is the only theory of evolution that can be taught, which will ensure that the ghost of this theory will live on for many more years. At the back of my mind, I wonder whether the scientific frauds are perpetrated today because some scientists have realised that science is not about a correct interpretation of the current scientific knowledge, but rather, a skilful manipulation of other people's perceptions.

Stanford researchers try to solve satellite mystery

PALO ALTO, Calif. (KGO) -- Sending a spacecraft into orbit is a tenuous business. Surviving the launch is only part of the challenge. Once it is in space, it must survive the rigors of that environment. That can be tough on hardware.

It is one of those under-reported mysteries of the space age -- a rocket delivers a payload into orbit, or on a mission, all appears fine, and then... "Unfortunately, we do not have one way or two way communication with the spacecraft," Stanford university researcher Sigrid Close said.

It happens regularly. "Satellites are failing, there are anomalies and we are not quite sure what is happening," Close said. But at Stanford University, Close and PhD candidate Nicolas Lee have been thinking about it. "Most people focus on mechanical damage," Close said.

One theory is that these satellites are victims of meteoroids, which are smaller than grains of sand, but moving at 60 kilometers per second. When they hit a satellite, they ionize and leave behind an electrical charge.

Comment: Please remember, the satellite communication industry is a multi-billion dollar enterprise, that generally do not want to talk about issues that relate to the viability of this business. This article is a rare glimpse, that reveals that there are new conditions in the space environment of Earth that are rendering ordinary satellites that cost about 250 million dollars each unuseable. The meteoroids, which are smaller than grains of sand could be also linked to claims that Earth is being flooded with more dust from outer space.

Scientists studying sunspots for the past 2 decades have concluded that the magnetic field that triggers their formation has been steadily declining. If the current trend continues, by 2016 the sun’s face may become spotless and remain that way for decades—a phenomenon that in the 17th century coincided with a prolonged period of cooling on Earth.

Comment: The recent behaviour of the Sun has historic precedents, where solar activity declined and the Earth cooled resulting in intense cold in Europe. The mosted well known periods were the Maunder Minimum between the 1620s to the 1710s and the Dalton Minimum, between the 1790s and 1820s. The confusing part to predicting solar activity, is that this sluggish behavioour could quickly reverse and turn into a monsterously active Sun, so either way, life is going to change on this planet, there does not seem to be an easy option.

This is worth noting if you watched the AGU meeting (listed below), because the solar scientists did not seem to want to talk about the sun's longer cycles. Russian scientists have discovered a bicentennial cyclic changes in Sun’s luminosity, which they consider to have essential effect on Earth’s climatic changes, see archive Best of the Blog - The Sun. Yet, even the well know 11 year cycle is only approximate so we read:

"A different solar parameter showing long-term changes is the length of the approximately 11-year sunspot cycle. This quantity is far from being constant. It is known to vary with solar activity so that high activity implies short solar cycles whereas long solar cycles are characteristic for low activity levels of the Sun. Gleissberg (1944) demonstrated that the variation occurred in a systematic manner with a periodicity of 70-90 years similar to, but not exactly in phase with the variation of the magnitude of the sunspot number."

On the 350th anniversary of the Royal Society we reflect on how it first successfully promoted science as a sober and reasonable force serving society by dampening the prevailing apocalyptic ‘enthusiasm’ at large in Restoration England, and how the Society’s relationship to fearful prognostations was recently reversed when it came to promote apocalyptic environmentalism. This reversal is indicated by the election of the Royal Society’s current president in 2005, shortly after he had published one of the most extremely apocalyptic books ever written by a scientist.

Comment: If you have read my essay The Greatest Transition and understood that astronomers are much more likely than most to be aware of the truth behind massive global change, then the apocalytic tone of this book should be no surprise. I might even get a copy, as Sir Martin Rees is the Queen's astronomer and it is a complete certainty, that he will be aware of preserved ancient astronomical knowledge passed down through millenia, which relates to astronomical cycles that can have a devastating impact on Earth. Comment: Maybe we have got to some kind of tipping point, as many people can no longer tolerate the abundance of weirdness occuring in our environment. Whatever, it's still hard to believe that people are actually talking about a UFO crashing into the birds, despite their trauma, and it is much more likely the birds became disorientated by a disturbed geomagnetic field, lost the sense of where they were and hit the ground with a thump. Anders Wirdheim of the Swedish Ornithological Society (Sveriges ornitologiska förening, SOF) believes the jackdaws likely were frightened in the middle of the night, then flew around in the dark and collided with various objects. "Jackdaws spend the night in trees in large flocks. If they are frightened, hundreds of birds could take flight at once," he told TT. Wirdheim noted that the affected bird species in the US are also those who spend the night in large flocks. He added that the birds' situation may have aggravated because they are weakened.

Power Balance admits no science behind wristbands

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Shaquille O'Neal swears by them. The Power Balance bracelet, he says, gives him a competitive edge on the court. It's no gimmick, he says. It's for real. It may be for him, but Australian authorities say the California-based company behind the wildly popular wristbands and pendants has no business claiming that they improve balance, strength and flexibility.

And they even got Power Balance to admit it. The company wrote: "We admit that there is no credible scientific evidence that supports our claims." It also agreed to give refunds to customers who believe they were cheated. [...] "It's just like a pair of lucky socks," Reiff said. "It's a lucky charm, and if you believe in it, then it's excellent."

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission took action after an independent review panel in September found that the Power Balance claims were misleading and breached the therapeutic goods advertising code. The Therapeutic Goods Complaints Resolution Panel demanded that Power Balance drop claims from its website that the bands improved flexibility, balance and strength.

Comment: Well.... The makers of these powerbands are completely ignorant, but they have the ability to sell. Of course, there is science that explains how these powerbands work, it's called the Placebo Effect. If you can persuade someone that something that they can take or do, will make them feel better, improve their performance or even cure them, then it will work. Quite frankly, there is nothing wrong with Placebo. In the past, scientists stated that 30% of all healing is caused by Placebo, but with the latest shock revelations of Placebo doubling it's effect in the last 30 years, there is some confusion as to whether that means that 60% of all healing is now caused by the Placebo Effect. Seriously, Power Balance need to find scientists who understand how the Placevo Effect works to re-write their marketing literature so that it becomes perfectly legal. Please note: studies prove that even when people are told they are getting a sugar pill, it makes no difference and people improve, that is why pharmaceutical companies are in a state of panic. Now, they are even thinking that they should not even try and beat placebo, but just compete amongst themselves as to who can sell the better drug, that does not necessarily work better than a sugar pill. This is amazing but true. Whatever, may the consciousness associated with the power of belief get stronger and stronger on the planet and more and more ordinary people gain some betterment. May more people benefit from sugar pills and all sorts of snake oil, as long as it's safe and cheap. Amen. LOL.

Shift of Earth's magnetic north pole impacts Tampa airport

TAMPA - Scientists say the magnetic north pole is moving toward Russia and the fallout has reached -- of all places -- Tampa International Airport. The airport has closed its primary runway until Jan. 13 to repaint the numeric designators at each end and change taxiway signage to account for the shift in location of the Earth's magnetic north.

The closure of the west parallel runway will result in more activity on the east parallel runway and more noise for residential areas of south Tampa. The busiest runway will be re-designated 19R/1L on aviation charts. It's been 18R/36L, indicating its alignment along the 180-degree approach from the north and the 360-degree approach from the south.

Later this month, the airport's east parallel runway and the seldom used east-west runway will be closed to change signage to their new designations. The Federal Aviation Administration required the runway designation change to account for what a National Geographic News report described as a gradual shift of the Earth's magnetic pole at nearly 40 miles a year toward Russia because of magnetic changes in the core of the planet.

Comment: I am surprised to see that this has hit the press. Presumably, this kind of maintenance is done quite often these days, as we know the North Pole 'wander' is accelerating into Siberia. Well, there are a lot of people checking their compasses and a lot of disquiet, maybe the frequent magnetar blasts are now quickly degrading Earth's magnetic field? My efforts to warn people that energy field shielding is necessary, is looking more and more realistic, as obviously, the cosmic radiation levels on Earth will increase as the Earth's magnetic field continues to morph and decline.

Chemical plant blaze at Moerdijk sparks Dutch alert

Southern areas of the Netherlands are on the top state of alert after a blaze at a chemical plant near Rotterdam sent out a thick plume of smoke.

The cloud from the fire at Moerdijk was floating north and had reached the city of Dordrecht, Dutch media said. Some 400,000 litres of carcinogenic material are stored at the Chemie-Pack plant, De Telegraaf newspaper says.

Some reports said toxic fumes had been released, but others said they were not dangerous. Radio Netherlands Worldwide described the fumes as a "huge cloud of toxic black smoke". However, Associated Press news agency quoted Moerdijk Mayor Wim Denie as saying measurements had not detected fumes that could form a health risk. The cause of the blaze has not yet been established.

'Fluid' orbs, flashing lights reported over San Francisco

A San Francisco, CA, witness in the Cole Valley neighborhood watched a series of flashing lights and moving orbs that seemed to have a "fluid" nature to them on January 3, 2011, according to testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was first drawn to the window when "a flashing light caught my eye from the top of the hills to the south." The witness then saw a series of flashing lights that seemed to be about a quarter-mile away. This went on for about 5 minutes.

"My first thought was that someone was taking flash photographs from the top of the hill," the witness stated. "Why someone would do this in the middle of the night is beyond me, but I was searching for a rational explanation for what I was seeing." Then the source of the flashing light seemed to move.

"Next, the flashing light took a different position on top of the same hill, slightly off to the side of where it had been. It glowed a faint 'trio' of white, blue, and red light. The light then seemed to sort of morph and change, and a glowing orb 'flew' to the hill that is the eastern side of where the UCSF medical center and campus are."

As the orb moved, the houses behind it were "illuminated a brilliant red hue." "I use the word 'flew' in quotes because the orb object seemed to move in a way that was more 'fluid gliding' if that makes sense. It seemed to be made of plasma, and the light that it was/carried was like a 'liquid light'. The orb then seemed to reposition itself on the new hill and stayed hovered there. It stayed a reddish-amber glow at this point."

Comment: It's getting more and more obvious that entities from another dimension are appearing and many ufologists must be starting to sweat, as they realise that they ignored their peers who boldly stated over 40 years ago that Earth had a shadow biosphere. The flashing lights are something that Professor Erling Strand stated was common with the light phenomena at Hessdalen, but this is not often noted by in the usual eye witness accounts.

The idea is to ensure that research, especially research paid for by public funds, is accessible to the public, wrote Redfield, an associate professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. She runs a microbiology research lab in the university’s Life Sciences Centre.

Why Your Genes Don't Determine Your Health

The decoding of the human genome at the dawn of the millennium carried the hope and promise of the beginning of the end of human suffering. However, after more than a decade of intense exploration of the human genome the burden of human disease and suffering has only increased across the globe. [...]

The story of your health is much more complex than genetic programming. It is ultimately determined by the dynamic interplay of the environment washing over genes creating the "you" of this moment. The good news is that this has been the year of discoveries about "omics"--epigenomics, exposomics, nutrigenomics and microbiomics and toxigenomics--that do, in fact, hold the key to unlocking our health and disease mysteries.

The Epigenome: Bypassing Darwin and Evolution

More important than our collection of genes, it now appears, is how those genes are controlled by both internal and external factors--our thoughts, stress, social connections, what we eat, our level of physical and mental activity, and our exposure to microbes and environmental toxins. These factors are switches that turn genes on and off and determine which proteins are expressed. The expressed proteins, in turn, trigger signals of disease or health.

What's even more striking is that if your DNA is tagged by an environmental factor, such as a pesticide, the impact this environmental factor has on your genes can be passed down through generations. The "epigenome" become inheritable. That means if your grandmother ate too much sugar, or smoked, or was exposed to mercury from too much sushi, the genetic modifications she incurred from this exposure could affect you. Her epigenome would carry an increased risk of disease that could be passed down from generation to generation. Interestingly, the Darwinian and Lamarckian worldviews are intersecting in 2010.

Comment: It's taken a long time but the intellectual 'elite' have been forced to abandon Darwin's Theory of Evolution (1859) that has reigned supreme and geneticists are now following in the footsteps of Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829) who was reviled and died in disgrace. The new enlightenment reminds me of the following biblical quote:

Exodus 20:5,6: “For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”

In reality, this discovery strengthens more metaphysical beliefs that our thoughts affect our well being. Personally, I think this is a hornet's nest and I would like to clarify that it is our unconscious beliefs through systematic programming from others that is the biggest problem for most people. This incredible crop circle was virtually identical to the depiction of a scene from the children's book interpreted as the existence of dimensional doorways leading to another world. My firm belief at the time was that we could expect that our world will get stranger and stranger, I don't think anyone can argue that we are seeing more and more curiosities.

New observations of the Sun indicate that the search for the factors that play a role in the initiation and evolution of eruptive and explosive events, sought after for improved space-weather forecasting, requires knowledge of much, if not all, of the solar surface field.

The combination of observations from two NASA missions, the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) enable us to view much of the solar surface and atmosphere simultaneously and continuously for the first time. These near-global observations often show long-distance interactions between magnetic areas that exhibit flares, eruptions, and frequent minor forms of activity. These interactions were previously suspected, but have never been observed until now.

We analyzed a series of flares, filament eruptions, coronal mass ejections, and related events which occurred on 1--2 August 2010. These events extended over a full hemisphere of the Sun, only two-thirds of which is visible from the Earth's perspective.

Comment: This is an exercise: count how many times the solar astrophysicists mentions plasma and magnetics in relation to the Sun. I think we can safely say there has been a paradigm shift. With all the new observations from space probes and satellites sending back data, nobody in any responsible position would now be stupid enough to wax lyrical about the relative merits of gravity to explain the ferocious and explosive plasma manifestations seen on the Sun. I was a little surprised that the experts do not have such distinct definitions for solar flares and coronal mass ejections, but I think the issue is that they are more interested in causality. Well, the Plasma/Elecric Universe pioneers have been partially vindicated, but there are many other cosmic enigmas with their associated outdated theories that need revising too. Interestingly, at around 27 mins, in a reply to a question from the media about the Earth's magnetic field, the answer was to refer to the acceleration of the magnetic North pole and fast changes to the location of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), and hence the quickly changing dynamics within the Earth's core. Again, this all scotches old theory of everything taking millions of years and reminds me of what I wrote in my book, that we know more about the Moon than we do of what is going on beneath our feet. At the end of this press conference, this panel of experts explain the dire state of Space Weather forecasting and in response, the feeling I had was: God help us...

Comment: After decades of truth seeking, I have worked out that information about 'The End Times' has been recorded in all the world's religions, and retained by indigenous and small esoteric groups. Basically, it refers to what happens at various points in the Earth's precessional cycle that overall takes about 26,000 years. This means that all the doom and fearmongering is actually based on a certain reality, but the meaning and details have been generally lost. As far as I understand it, massive evolutionary change to the environment of Earth and major astronomical events occur, but the fate of mankind is determined by the overall spiritual state of mankind. This is explained in my essay The Greatest Transition and I would be interested in any other author who has written on this subject that could provide the same level of clarity. As far as I am concerned, the Catholic Church did the Christian world a disservice by not refering to the return of 'Christ' energies, but in reality, the serious 'Initiates' would of course know that. So, if you look at the history of these profits prophets of doom, you will note that whipping people up with tales of God's judgement is very common, but very very few properly explain how and why mankind are destined for judgement and how we can tell what the likely outcome is this time for the whole of mankind today. To cut a long story short, I think we are on a rocky road to a completely transformed world, a Paradise to host humans of a higher level of consciousness. The stress will be due to the refusal by the old guard to cooperate with Universal Intelligence and change the way we do business on this planet to one that is in harmony with planetary intelligence.

Comment: How curious... this IS the next massive evolutionary bomb that will serve to update/upgrade human consciousness, and a few folk have been preparing for decades.... I quite like the imagined speech by Obama that many would interprete as a 'soft' disclosure but to be honest, I think the sledgehammer approach would be better to get this hurdle over and done with. Then it would become completely apparent to the average citizen, why there has been a strange, almost nonchalant attitude of world controllers to the subject of strange objects in our skies. The public would learn the facts that we are seeing another 'out of this world' lifeform (Shadow Biosphere), that humans have absolutely no control over, but generally, they mind their own business and don't cause us that much trouble. Presumably, most would conclude that we would just have to live with a new awareness our cosmic neighbours.

Hundreds of dead blackbirds found near New Roads - Louisiana [US]

LABARRE, La. - Around 500 dead blackbirds and starlings have been found in Pointe Coupee Parish, according to state wildlife officials.

The birds were spotted lying in roads and ditches near Labarre Elementary School. The community is between Morganza and New Roads on Highway 10. Scientists from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have been sent out to collect samples, which will be sent for testing to the University of Georgia and National Wildlife Center in Wisconsin.

Explorers discover spectacular caves in Vietnam

For decades, geologists have known that Vietnam is home to some of the world's most spectacular caves, many of them largely unexplored. Now husband-and-wife cavers have documented perhaps the world's largest: Hang Son Doong, big enough in places to accommodate a New York City block of skyscrapers.

The cave in the Annamite Mountains contains a river and jungle (its name translates to "mountain river cave") and even its own thin clouds, and its end remains out of sight. It's part of a network of about 150 caves in central Vietnam near the Laotian border.

Green Groups Try to Sex Up Climate Change

The amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere keeps going up and up, but public interest in climate change is sinking. Environmentalists are trying to come up with new ways to make the issue sexy. But shock tactics can backfire all too easily. Climate change used to make headlines. But these days the issue appears to have largely fallen off the radar.

World leaders recently negotiated a new climate agreement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico, but public interest in the issue was limited. It was a marked contrast to the UN climate conference in Copenhagen in December 2009, which had been declared of historic importance in the runup to the meeting, only to then fail spectacularly. The theft of e-mails from the University of East Anglia had badly damaged the image of climate research shortly before the summit.

Environmentalists and scientists are concerned about the massive drop in public interest in the topic over the last year. Now they are looking for new strategies to turn the tide. They're searching for so-called "mind bombs" -- highly emotional images that reduce a complex problem down to one core message.

What's Killing Arkansas' Fish and Birds? Tests Underway to Determine Why Birds Tumbled From Sky, Fish Floated Dead

Thunder and lightning is being blamed for the death of thousands of blackbirds who rained down out of the Arkansas sky on New Year's Eve. "There were multiple thunderstorms that night and for several days that week," said Dr. George Badley, state veterinarian for the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission. "Red-winged blackbirds fly in large groups and if they got pulled into a thunderstorm, likely lightning struck them. That would be my best guess."

Officials sent some of the carcasses of the red-winged blackbirds to Badley's Arkansas laboratory. The rest of the birds to be tested were taken to laboratories in Georgia and Wisconsin. "Almost every one of them...had multiple internal hemorrhages which would mean that it was trauma, not a disease process. Their stomachs were empty, which would rule out toxicity from eating some kind of poison grain," Badley said. [...]

100,000 Drum Fish Dead Along Arkansas River A freakish weather week in Arkansas that included tornadoes and heavy thunderstorms ended this weekend with not only the mysterious death of thousands of birds, but also the death of hundreds of thousands of drum fish. [...] Estimates put the number of dead drum fish at 100,000. Officials from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said the fish kill and mysterious bird deaths are unrelated. [...]

Goodwin has not seen the fish yet but thinks environmental influences could have played a big role in their deaths. "My first impression was given that it's only one species and that it happened very suddenly, it has something to do with a strong environmental influence and probably not anything related to toxins," Goodwin said. "The thing that is likely to impact them is rapid temperature changes, we have had some very cold weather and very warm weather."

Comment: These days saying the birds were killed by thunder and lightning is not an innocent explanation. Atmospheric scientists are telling us that thunderstorms are generating x-rays, gamma-rays which are basically just extreme x-rays and high-energy electrons that can be detected by satellite and at ground level. Scientists are not even sure if they are actually related to thunderstorms but speculate that if they are, energy could propagate upwards to effect planes, but what about energy propagting downwards? Friday night, ringing in the New Year took on a whole different meaning for the citizens of Beebe. Around 11:30 p.m., enforcement officers with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission began getting reports of dead black birds falling from the sky in the city limits of Beebe.

BEEBE, Ark.-- Friday night, ringing in the New Year took on a whole different meaning for the citizens of Beebe. Around 11:30 p.m., enforcement officers with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission began getting reports of dead black birds falling from the sky in the city limits of Beebe.

Officers estimated that over 1,000 birds had fallen out of the sky over the city before midnight. Most of the birds were dead, but some were still alive when officers arrived. The blackbirds fell over a one-mile area in the city. AGFC wildlife officer Robby King responded to the reports and found hundreds of birds. "Shortly after I arrived there were still birds falling from the sky," King said. King collected about 65 dead birds that will be sent to the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission lab and the National Wildlife Health Center lab in Madison, Wis. Comment: At the beginning of the science fiction film The Core (see Movie: The Core Trailer [2:20] ) , it gives different scenarios like birds being confused and humans with pacemakers dropping dead that is interpreted as a sign that Earth's magnetic field is rapidly declining. Well, as we have been told from official sources, there are now permanent holes and frequent massive breaches in Earth's magnetosphere, at the same time as as we are being blasted from the sun and deep space. NASA and the ESA have explained that Space Weather is accelerating, and it seems that the British are now so desperate that the UK Space Agency are inviting the public to help them predict space weather, which could mean that the current system set up to use ACE satellite data and presumably other recent satellites are not working to prevent satellite, radio and GPS communication failures. We do know there is now tremendous concern about severe space weather and the risk of national grid power failures due to anomalous electric currents crippling transformers and the UK Defence Secretary will be presenting a new report on this matter in Spring 2011 . In terms of bird strikes, there could also be lethal energies leaving Earth too. According to NASA there are strange plasma plumes that are effecting GPS signals and scientists are detecting by satellite ULFs & VLFs emissions that occur prior to earthquakes. State wildlife officials went door-to-door today to collect the creatures from rooftops, trees, and yards. Officials estimate that between 4,000 and 5,000 birds—mostly blackbirds—began tumbling from the sky late on New Year's Eve and into the day yesterday. Officials remain stumped."

"OZARK, Ark. (AP) — An Arkansas Game and Fish Commission spokesman says dead drum fish now cover a 20-mile section of the Arkansas River near Ozark. Seven teams from the state agency visited the affected portion of the river Friday. Commission spokesman Keith Stephens says an official estimate of how many fish have died is expected on Monday, but he tells the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the number is likely in the hundreds of thousands."
Well, this is probably related to the bird fall and strengthens the argument of both being related to low or ultra-low frequency emissions that might be a precursor to an earthquake. This must be very frightening for locals.
